Clear corners, illegal in NJ?

Does anyone know if your corners have to be orange?

Mugatu 04-14-2006 08:19 PM

will that honestly stop you? it doesn't stop everyone else.

Bart! 04-14-2006 08:24 PM

Not that it will, just trying to find out for my friends Maxima. Is it, or is it not legal?

Thanks mate.

Yes it is. The punishment is 5 years in jail.

Technically, clear corners are illegal everywhere in the US, orange bulbs or not, as you are modifying a safety feature. But usually cops don't care.

That's not quite how it works. There are federal regulations that the US imposes on auto makers, one of them being that there needs to be an amber REFLECTOR at the front corners. Now, state laws vary on how you can modify said reflector. Many states (such as mine) just adopt the federal law as state law which makes clear corners illegal here (I still have them). Some states have their own laws and some don't specify a reflector in front.

Here's a site with links to some different state's laws. Looks like you're out of luck in NJ!

If your buddy does put in clear corners, for the love of god, please make sure that they glow amber (use amber bulbs or stealth bulbs).

Bart! 04-15-2006 11:11 PM

How is it illegal to have clear corners when the 2006 models are standard equiped with them?

kmg1186 04-15-2006 11:33 PM

bart don't worry about it. no cop in new jersey will ticket you for having clear corners....as long as you have amber bulbs in them. if not, then i can't guarantee anything.

I cant imagine any cop giving you shit about clear corners, they will stop u during the day time for having an air freshner hanging from your rear view as an obstruction before the corners.
Especially if you are crusing with friends at night, they cant even tell what color the corner lenses are.
just dont have the bottom of your car glowing, or having your system cranked all the way and u should be straight

Doesn't matter, there are cars out there that come stock with clear corners. they just reflect amber.

Advice: Do what I did, and find a copy of your state's vehicle laws online. Virginia law says that IF they are installed, they must be EITHER white or amber. No sense listening to rumors - go straight to the source.

To answer the original question, clear corners are not legal in New Jersey. Whether you get stopped or not is another question. I have been running with no front license plate for almost 2 years( NJ requires front and back) and have never been ticketed.

There are no 2006 models that don't have some kind of amber reflector on the front corner. The reflector doesn't need to be part of the corner light, but it has to be there. This is Federal regulation, there are no exceptions. Show me a US car in stock form that doesn't have an amber reflector somewhere at the corner.
