change gear second rev 9.5 to third white smoke

I change the second at 9.5 to the third and something strange happen doesn't want to go higher 6000. So I stop the Car wait for a bit and when I restart a lot off white smoke coming out. I drive it back to home and everything seem fine rev normal go to 9 easily except for a rattle and no more smoke. Should I bring the car to the dealer. Anybody got the same problem. I was at the track and this happen at the first run. Believe since I got to the track this is the first time I don't finish a race. I will never brought that car to a track again.

You hit the Rev limiter and it shut down the car. That's why it would't go over 6000.

Usually it's a lower RPM. White smoke is probably from affects from hitting Rev limiter.

Like u said it works fine now. Your not suppose to hold it at 9500. I do believe the Rev limiter is 105000. If your at the track you hit it, because you were too busy keeping your eye on the road. You think you hit 9500, but you went past it.

sounds weird, I've put my car into second instead of fourth at ~ 90 mph and the tach went almost to the digital speedo. I instictively clutched went to fourth and car never skipped a beat... Can't say you could do that with a boinger....

the rev limiter is a tempoary fuel cut it should not last.. now it could have decided that ther was a knock ( bad gas ) and retarded the the engine far too much and caused a miss and the car went to limp mode... usually when you loose power as 6k and the engine feels like it's choking, it's either a blocked/blown cat ( backfire ) or the fuel pump isn't maintaining pressure ( which is a bitch to test for ) and the dealer can't even do it without jury rigging something ( they can test sitting still but not under full load where the problem is evident )

if it went away i'd not worry about it, but keep it in mind if you see anything else weird...

oh, and this car was born for track.. it belongs there...

I drive it tonight, nothing wrong with it. I do believe this car need a complete manual. How to drive it. :Eyecrazy:

i did the same thing , i was in fourth and some ricer was tailgating me , so i dropped it into 3rd and ran it into 9300 then all of a sudden the car lost complete power, the check engine light was flashing, and i pulled over to the side, let the car rev to normal idling speed and tried driving it normal again, no problems but the light was still flashing. next day hooked it up to a obd sensor , it read "cylinder 2 misfire" . erased the code and never had a problem again.......stilll revving the hell out of it to this day with no reoccurences

I thought a 9k redline was plenty of play room, you guys hitting 9300 and 9500 are just being greedy :P hehe

Too much oil in there, I reckon. You topped it up before you went to the track, didn't you?

I think you've overfilled it. Seen this before a few times.

Yes I check the oil before go to the track and it was missing some so I filled it up. T

I don't think it was prestone everything was fine and the oil is the right color.

I've ran past 9400 rpm before while passing a v8 firebird, and 9500 on a 6th to 2nd downshift (accident). I scared the shit out of me, but nothing wrong whatsoever. Just a littl poo in the draws.

How much oil is too much? 5 qts, 5.5 qts?

Anything above the full line.

Just so you know, going past 9k doesn't make the car go faster

zoom44 04-20-2006 01:54 PM

well thats debatable- depends how fast you are on your shifts and where you end up in the power band in the next gear. shifting just over 9k usually puts me right where i want to be in the next gear.

OK....I think you overfilled it. Triple check the level again and drain off any excess. A little over the full mark wont hurt, but too much over turn the RX-8 into a Pitts Special.

I hit the rev limiter all the time....

no problems here or than making me look like a moron when you see my head lunge forward from the power cut off...

I know on some tight autox courses hitting the rev limiter for a second in 1st gear before braking and going the next turn, its faster to hit the rev limiter (9600) than it is to shift to 2nd and then have to shift back to 1st or go thru the rest of the course in 2nd.........

I have bounced off the rev limiter several times, I also have downshifted one to many gears and the engine overrevs.....but even after that the car ran fine.

If the motor does over rev I belive the oil injention keeps going, even though there is no combustion, so depending on how long....it could put a lot of excess oil in the exhaust stream, that then gets burned off when the motor starts running again........

could also confuse the o2 sensor and cause the car to protect itself with a 6000rpm rev limit.........just a thought.
