what does it mean by a "CATBACK exhaust system"

 

It's an exhaust from the catalytic converter back (a muffler witha short pipe), so it won't really change emissions, nor your horsepower...

 

I thought it DID help horsepower a little. If it doesnt, why does everyone have one? Anything that helps to open up the exhaust should aid in giving horsepower.

Well on most cars like Honda's with a restrictive exhaust, it does add some horses. I think with the renesis, it is pretty opened up to start with so the catback on an rx-8 doesnt add much power.

 

Yeah, the catback does not affect emissions. Also, I think the catback means street-legal as well.

 

Don't listen to these guys - it's a special exhaust system that creates a special sound that only felines respond to - it calls them over like a dog whistle. You rev your engine, and your cat comes running. Hence "Cat Back".

The Catback is an appearance/exhaust note mod and IMHO the Racing Beat should be standard on all RX-8's. It is a sophisticated deep note and draws attention only when you want it to... When you see a good looking girl in a Mustang and you get on it to show off! "Here, kitty kitty"!

 

I use mine to scare old ladies walking down the sidewalk, or to just annoy my neighbors!

But honestly, the installation of a catback system on this car, IMO is a sound mod. As mentioned. But a good one, the stock exhaust sound did not match the car. It was too subdued for my taste. The RB unit is a nice option, but it weighs a ton. Which does not help in the battle to get the car to loose weight. But that is not important to everyone.

 

L8APEX's exhaust is custom made by "Team Moon" and it is awesome! He's being humble.

 

I've heard a lot of good things about the Borla exhaust also.

 

That's an incorrect statement. My RB exahust did exactly as advertised. Increased top HP by 4. Not a ton I agree, but it's more nonetheless. Adding the intake added another 4.

Cars that inhale/exhale better usually make more power.
