Be careful out there with DSC off...
 

Came around a corner tonight 2 blocks from home with dsc off in the rain.

I came about a foot from causing serious damage to my RX8 in the form of the curb.

Very unexpected, and I'm glad I was able to reverse and back out of the situation.

Damn, I should have left it on, but it's a bad habit to turn the dsc off.

I'm just glad everything is ok!

Yeah...that would suck...but hey....dont blame yourself for turning it off.... WE live in VEGAS...its not suppose to RAIN here....

rear wheel drive doesn't work well in rain/snow/gravel. never acdelerate hard during or going into a turn.

It was an off throttle situation, but rain put me at the limits a bit tonight.

RWD is harder in the weather/rain/wet/snow, but overall it rocks! It just surprised me coming home after buying condoms.

hopefully the other rubber wont fail so easily because they dont have stability control for that

I only turn my DSC off when I'm stopped, and turning a corner that has a wide berth, giving me plenty of play room to swing my tail out.

Once the fun is done, it is turned right back on.

There is a problem that is fairly unique to Las Vegas: Oil building up on the road surface. With it sometimes going hundreds of days without rain, the roads become very, very slick.. almost black ice slick. When the rain hits the blacktop, the oil rises and sits on top of the water, making a think layer. I usually takes 3-4 rains all within a month to wash enough of it away...

You think it's bad driving the RX-8 in the rain, try my turbo REPU :)

Wimps. ;) Try driving 6 months a year on ice/snow. I was about to warn about the oil. Good post. Same in Frisco and LA.

that happens anywhere it doesn't rain for several months. very common in LA.

hopefully you didn't downshift during that turn. i don't know if it's common with rx-8's but 350z's spin out like crazy when you do that.

Nah, just too hot coming around the corner while braking.

Couldn't countersteer, as it was downhill and there was no traction. Once the rear end got out, it just kept going.... just like on ice!

Oh well, it's all good! Rain is gone and the streets are dry once again!

I was driving extra slow and safe yesterday for this reason

I did a U-turn in the rain the first day I had my 8, and got a little funky on the gas, started to spin, and I could feel the DSC cutting power/braking to the back wheels and saving my ass. Worth the $$$. I leave mine on unless I want to chirp the tires from a light (not very often).

i only have DSC on if its raining/snowing.

You should all learn to handle the power of your 8 with the DSC OFF ! Then when you really know what that car can give you and how you can react to it you can have it on again. Those of you starting to drive should either have it on forever or learn with it off for at least 3-4 months.

I drove with DSC off for the first week I had my 8... And then the rains came. (I live in Portland, OR) I am eager to leave it off, but the thought off loosing traction coming around a corner and the ensuing fender bender keep me in check. Better safe than sideways - at least within the city limits.

I did a 720 in the free way in my rear wheel drive 240sx several years ago. I use up all six lane of the freeway. Luckaly it was 2am and no care with in 200 yard of me. My car came to a stop about 2 feet from the wall. I was doing 65. And me 240sx didn't have DSC. Ever since I got my 8 I keep it on when I'm driving on the street and turn it of at the track. It's still very exciting with it on.

Same crap happened to me earlier in the week. Had gotten a lot of rain earlier in the day. My girlfriend and I were out driving by houses to look at Christmas decorations, went around a corner and lost the back end. I counter steered, but too much and the back end went out the other way. Finally got the car stopped, on the other side of the residential street, with the car facing the correct direction of traffic. My girlfriend..."No more of that shit! fuck that!" Ya...she's a little terrified of wet roads now and assertive driving.

When I test drove the RX-8, the sales manager told me to go out and "spin it around". So I did. I was amazed that the DSC would not let me do it. I couldn't even get the car half way around. It is impressive that you almost can't mess up with it on even when trying. I did turn it off and spun the car around on the test drive in a parking lot though. Donuts in an RX-8 on a test drive with the salesman in the car. It just doesn't get much better than that.

I bingled my 8 into a curb one night with the DSC off... ouch, did a nasty bit of damage too... all fixed now, but needless to say, I don't drive in the wet without DSC on all the time now

DSC is a godsend.

I panic stopped my RX-7 in the rain once at only 30 mph and slid 180 degrees, completely out of control. I never felt safe in it again.

Another time a van cut me off on a freeway, coming within inches of my front bumper. I stomped on my brakes on my Dodge Stealth to avoid hitting him and spun out, skidded sideways at 70mph and hit the center barrier. The closest I ever came to dying.

The RX-8 with DSC feels very stable in wet weather. On a secluded, wide road, I deliberately stomped on my brakes in the rain at 30mph. The RX came to a nice stop without any yaw.

The only time I'd turn off my DSC would be during high performance drivers training or on very safe roads with wide shoulders where I could practice unassited driving.

Yeah, if you are on a no traffic low speed road with good visibility, try slamming the brakes on at 30 mph.

You'll be surprised at how fast she stops ;)

Don't rely on that distance all the time, as braking conditions will vary! Use common sense out there in the real world!

I usually leave it off, however in the rain, do yourself a favor and leave it on. Unless of course you want to have some fun and fishtail around the supermarket parking lot like I did the other day (no cars, people or cops around).. hehe..

There's no point to turning it off in the rain. None that I can think of. It's as risky as not putting on your seatbelt..
