Car is hard to start

This may have been answerd before but search didnt find much. Just recently my 8 has had a hard time starting. Doesnt mater wether the car is warm or cold, It has been taking about 3-4 sec of cranking to start the car, and the battery does not sound weak. I have a little under 42k miles on the car, I just had the RP HighFlow Cat instaled. I dont see how that could have anyhting to do with it.

When were the spark plugs changed last? And have you ever changed the coils?

greg985 10-25-2008 08:54 PM

Mazda "says" everything was changed at 30k miles

Do you have the replacement high torque starter? How do you like the super cat / RB exhaust combo?

I do not have the starter, I love the SuperCat/RB exhaust

Last time I filled up I put a little too much pre mix in, could that be the problem?

If by 'a little' you mean three extra bottles, then that's not the issue.

I'd suggest it may be the starter, coils or plugs.

2 things:

One, I see that you have a K&N intake. When was the last time it was cleaned and reoiled, and if it has been in for a while you might want to clean the MAF sensor?

Two, if the car is idleing and running OK, then I would discount the sparks or coils as the problem, and I would think about high speed starter if you do not already have it.

make sure that you have the updated starter.

I did buy the intake used from a member here so it may be a little dirty, but the car idels fine, i dont see how the intake could affect starting that much. Also where can I get the upgraded started? BHR?

A clogged air filter can cause starting issues as well as idleing issues because of the lack of air. That happens with the stock filter as easily as a K&N.

Upgraded starter is a TSB from Mazda. I got it for free before my warranty ran out. Not sure if your car is part of the TSB VIN range. If it isn't part of the VIN range then you have the starter already factory installed in your car.

Well I will clean my filter and see if that helps, I have to go to mazda to get a new shock put on soon, so I'll just ask them about it while I am there

coils fixed my car taking 4-5 seconds to start (as well as eliminating high rev misfires).. my car now starts in 1 second flat.

CyberPitz 10-27-2008 05:57 PM

My car only takes an extra second to start if it's REAL cold outside...

Does anybody happen to know the name of the TSB. I'm having the same problem even after installing new coils, spark plugs, and cleaning my K&N filter

ZumnRx8 10-27-2008 09:20 PM

engine flood

RotoRocket 10-28-2008 12:26 AM

Dealer rectified.

It was TSB 01-048/06; unfortunatly, they have revised it, leaving out all the battery and starter information.

Thanks for the help...here's a link to the old TSB

Turns out it was a bad battery. The battery was only cranking at less than half power
