Car gender

When you talk about your 8 to other people (as opposed to, to yourself, which I'm sure most of you do), how do you refer to it?
She, He, It ...? In French, cars have a feminine gender and are always referred to as She.
Just wondering.

winter 02-26-2004 02:17 AM

Let's see... it drains my wallet, I have pictures of it on my wall, and I spend all day at work daydreaming about the time I'll spend with it that evening.

Definitely female.

Xyntax 02-26-2004 02:22 AM

I remember when I was hunting for my first car, friends of mine discouraged me from getting the Miata coz they called it "chick car". To tell you the truth, I have not met anyone who would disagree. Strange huh?

But now, they do think that the RX-8 is a slick sport. Not girlie one bit. :)

I do address it as "she" when I talk about it.

IKnowNot'ing 02-26-2004 02:27 AM

In French, I do use feminine for all cars (ma RX8, une Countach) except for 4x4 SUV (le Touareg, le Cayenne, un Land). And 'it' only in English.

AutoBahnRX8 02-26-2004 02:35 AM

My Jeep is male (Cletus T. Mudd) http://www.cardomain.com/id/cletus_t_mudd

My Miata is female (Betsy) you can see a little of her on Cletus' site

My RX-8 is male (Thor) Guess I better make him a page too

hotpot 02-26-2004 02:44 AM

I guess a car with so many curves would be female. It's even got 2 tail pipes...hmm

fan 02-26-2004 06:20 AM

I've never really been into calling cars "she." I dunno why.

Anyway, its usually THE car, or THE 8.

Elara 02-26-2004 07:26 AM

She's too conniving to be anything but female (can't believe I said that). You can pretty much hear her begging to go faster, and faster, and faster...

Aratinga 02-26-2004 07:37 AM

All my cars are definitely "shes". I've even named two of 'em -- "Roxy" is the 8, and "Eva" is the orange Miata. The third Miata is just "the Miata"; she's the beater daily driver. The other two stay tucked away under covers. Ever wonder why they call 'em garage queens?

Roaddemon 02-26-2004 08:06 AM

I think the rx8 is a sexy masculine looking car. I've heard it's contour described on other forums as, resembling the shape of the male organ. I think it's a (he) but i always refer to it as (it) or the 8. The car has balls alright.

Elara sounds like she's one naughty chick.

Pirate Rex 02-26-2004 08:14 AM

Lets see...

My first car (79 Mustang Pace Car) was referred to as Indy (a bit asexual). A few in betweens were the "Flying Pumpkin" (95 Eclipse GST) and "Hoss" (94 Rodeo) My last two were called Trigger (97 Mustang GT) and Silver (2001 GT). I figure the 8 will either be Roxanne or Rex. I guess I'll figure it out when I meet him or her in a month.

Berni 02-26-2004 09:43 AM

gotta be "she" it is a love affair for most of us. beside i can't call it "he" or "Him" then grab "his" stick all day (mt)

just an off the wall thought

Meowloud 02-26-2004 09:57 AM

Berni has a point... it does have a 'stick'.
I dunno for me. Too early to call. I'm thinking she because of the sleekness.... but definetly a he because just when I think I have mastered the stick, it becomes difficult starting-out in first. Hmmm, still haven't found that sweet spot... maybe it is a she?? :p

Winning_BlueRX8 02-26-2004 10:01 AM

berni has a good point. nonetheless all my cars have always been "shes".

You need new friends. What exactly is a "chick car"? One that regularly wins its class at autocross competitions? One that wins its class at SCCA track events? One that regularly gets praised for it's great handling and driving characteristics in every review over the past 14 years? Or is it just because it's only got 140 hp?

It's actually real simple - anyone who calls a Miata a "chick car" doesn't have a clue about sports cars, and isn't comfortable with their own sexuality. ;)

What was really funny was when Renault was marketing the R5 in North America back in the 70s, and came up with this great idea to have big decals along the side of the car labelling it "Le Car"! I thought it hilarious that Renault's own marketing people didn't know that it should have been "La Car"...

Gordon

Hmm let's see...
Curves, double tail pipes and a stick.
That would make it a, OMG, she-male! A sheit! Yikes!

lilbigman 02-26-2004 11:26 AM

My rx-8 is a she , if fact her name is Selma ,nice curves and she makes my heart pound.
Now if i can only get the shift tone to have a sexy hispanic moan errr tone to it life would be grand.

Liar!

I hate to break it to you but Roxy (short for Roxanne, and she don't like red lights) is safely her with me. She's a titanium bombshell with curves in all the right places. And when I treat her just right, she purrrrrrrs.

cruzdreamer 02-26-2004 02:28 PM

I refer to the 8 as a "she"...maybe cuz of the color(silver), the beautiful curves....dunno why!
