Cant decide

Ok so I'm about to buy another car
and what I am thinking of is the 04 Mazda RX-8 6-Speed (30K Miles), and a 07 Honda Civic SI

I have test driven the SI and have been in the rx-8, hopefully I'll test drive that by this weekend.

I like the si, but I like the RX-8 a lot more, I love the way it looks, its sound and the interior. But a lot of people are telling me that rotarie engines are very bad and that they dont last that long, that the car will die when its at like 100K and there will be several problems with the car, I was a reliable, fast and fun car. I know the RX-8 is fast and fun but reliability? Does it breakdown or have problems a lot? Is what I am hearing true?

Thank You

my last rotary hit 225,000. we raced it from about 175,000 on . . . . thrashed the snot out of it EVERY DAY!!! and it made it till 225,000 when I sold it. ran in to the owner about a year later . . .he said it was still runnin strong.

If you are a commuter , get the honda.
If you want a nice car, get the mazda

False.

If both cars are close in price, and the used RX-8 has been treated well, go with what you like better.

Let me guess, you heard that from someone who does not know a thing about cars.?! I have seen people burn every type of car . .honda . .nissan . . .toyota . . all because they could not see the oil light on the dashboard, or they kept the same spark plugs for too long . ( or something stupid like that )

I want both, the RX-8 is about 8K cheaper, I want a reliable daily drive and I want to eventually do small mods to it like an exhaust cf hood lower and springs nothing big
I plan on keeping the car for at least 3-4 years.
I want a nice car, that I can drive daily and that will be reliable

Last July, I bought a 2004 RX-8 with 24,000 miles. I've loved it. It's been reliable and fun, and I get a lot of comments on it (both both young and old).

what idiot told you that at 100k it wil breakdown? tell that noob to GTFO

puch96 03-14-2007 08:20 PM

The Rx8 is more reliable that what the majority of the people think... the thing is that you need to know how to use it...

What does that mean? "you need to know how to use it..."

I haven't driven it yet, but I'm leaning towards it...

Buy the RX-8.

Anyone who tells you that the Renesis will die at 100k miles is talking out of their ass, since not enough people to have a statistically meaningful sample have had them long enough to even try driving them that far. Talking out of their ass.

Stavesacre21 03-15-2007 03:02 AM

reliably speaking, the 8 should clearly have less parts to go bad...I mean for crying out loud, there's only 3 moving parts in the engine assembly!

The only potential would be the points of contact (apex seals) which since the rx-7, have been improved. From all i've heard thus far, 200K+ wouldn't be a surprise.

the rx8 will be the better of the two by far. its on a different level in my opinion style wise

Keep it oiled up. They are oil injected, so keep it full.
And make sure to redline it every day or two. This is no joke, they need to be run up all the time. It keeps the engine clean. Other than that, just like any engine . . . do not neglect it.

i just bought my rx8 a few months ago...love it. i have also looked at civic si. rx8 is better. i do a fair amount of driving. only downfall in the 8 is mpg, but once you drive it for a while you wont care how many times you stop to get gas.

04RX8man 03-15-2007 12:53 PM

Definately go for the 8 man. It's great it alot better than any honda and its great when people ask "what's it got in it" and u say a 1.3L and they laugh. lol Then you say rotary with 250 horses then they don't laugh haha. Go for the RX8 you won't go wrong.

My last car was a Civic SI (2000 coupe), which my son bought. In my mind, there is no comparison. Whenever I drive his car, I can't wait to get back to my 8. Even though the RX-8 will be reliable, I think the SI (and all Hondas) does have an edge.

I looked at a bunch of other cars before I got my 8 and concluded that none had the comfort, looks, features (GT), handling, and daily drivability of the 8 at the same price.

CarAndDriver 03-15-2007 02:55 PM

Wasnt there a long thread on this already?

CarAndDriver 03-15-2007 02:57 PM

Civic Si -- less maintenance and more aftermarket parts.

reddevilwarrior 03-15-2007 03:51 PM

18/23. If you dont want that, get an Si
