CAI problems
 

Just put in a new CAI on my 04 rx8 std tran 70k went with specter 3" all the way sound great, great throttle response, but when coasting around 4k rpm it gets jumpy and starts sputtering like a vacume leak but every thing checks out and when it starts sputtering and rev up to 5500rpm everything is fine and now i have a smell from exaust could this be my cat cleaning out i recently replaced my up flow 02sensor ?

OP, I recommend you take Charles' advice.

Is there any links on how to adjust the maf sensor or where to get a high flow maf sensor?

My honest opinion: reinstall your OEM intake. That CAI is really not doing you any good, and most likely causing more harm in performance than good.

My feeling is that trying to make it work with the "Spectre" may be more trouble than it's worth. Why not sell it and get a used Racing Beat or AEM?

The stock airbox with a high flow filter replacement is perfectly fine too.

I suggest you read the stickies and do your research on this site before your next upgrade.

Try disconnecting your battery for ten minutes to reset the ECU.

It may run better, but will still run bad.

Found How To Fix
 

First after much reserch and even more research i found out the reason that mainly AEM- CAI's are so sucsessful over other's and that making your own CAI is possibale and much more cheeper than buying one pre-fabed

1st The RX-8 air intake is actualy 3.25" inside diameter
2nd You can create any type of CAI as long as you don't go bellow 2.5" unless you
run 2 CAI lines only that you have to split after the MAFS
3rd The only exception is at the using the stock MAFS you have to maintain 3.25" ID and have at
least 2.5"' on either side of the MAFS the stock MAFS is calibrated to 3.25"ID
piping so using the 3" MAFS adapter is out of the question
4th The only way to get away without using the 3.25" ID MAFS tubing is to buy a
high flow MAFS or a jet flow mass air flow meter that comes with its own
tubing that its calibrated for and those run anywhere from $120 - $300 than
you might as well have bought the AEM CAI


I'm currently running 3" SS piping with the 7" spectre high flow filter and temporarily cut the MAFS tubing off the stock filter box to test the CAI I'll post some pic's before and after now I'm currently working on 1 solid Stainless Steel 4" pipe all the way into the bumper cover than SS piping down in front of the radiator with custom air scoop's underneath

your running rich as hell, if you dident have a cat on your car it would be shooting 3 to 4 ft flames randomly that lasted around 4 or 5 seconds each. i did it. everyone from my local car meet was scared to follow me to close on a cruise when i had a specter under the hood.

So, after everything is said and done, what have you actually gained by using a Crappy Air Intake (CAI) on the RX-8?

From what I can see, you've gotten worse driving performance, and now you're even forced to cut up your stock intake in order to hope to get your car back to a drivable state while using your Crappy Air Intake (CAI), which means your car will never run as well as it was originally designed to.

So, why did you buy the Crappy Air Intake (CAI) in the first place?
The forum pretty much declared unless you have a turbo or supercharger that more air than the airbox provides is never needed. So you must have had some reason to install it other than performance reasons, because there aren't any performance gains to be had with a Crappy Air Intake (CAI) installed on a stock engined RX-8.
