CAI Discussion

hey im in college and about to take a trip home... naturally i wanna buy more stuff for my car

so im looking to go cold air but idn which one to get

I was looking at either an HKS, an AEM, or a K&N

what are the benefits and drawback of each or can anyone say what they have / how they feel about it?

HKS is the most expensive around $490
AEM and K&N were both like 300-350

is the hks worth the extra $$??

thanks

search. With that said they're all a lot of noise and not much power. I have the k & n and I paid 240 for it. I would search around here for a used one to save some $$

I have the MS CAI which is the rebranded AEM CAI... it sounds nice and does lower the intake temp.

Send a PM to BHR, I think they're selling the AEM's at a pretty low price.

the K&N is also a ram air, that is different from the other 2, just something else to think about

Mugatu 09-22-2008 08:21 PM

they all add 25 horsepower to the wheels.

seriously, search.

04RX8man 09-22-2008 08:29 PM

they do not make too much horsepower just some noise and some actually make less HP

always.anthony 09-22-2008 09:48 PM

go short ram air intake. you don't need cold air for when you turbo your car in the future :P

how about a thread called "intakes, intakes, intakes". think there might be anything to find in there?

I put the K&N Typhoon V2 on my car early this year. It was worth it purely for the noise, which is now a nice throaty growl that's very unique to a rotary engine. It's better than an overly loud exhaust because it only makes the noise when you're really mashing on the throttle.

I don't think it made the car any faster at all. Cars which are made faster by a CAI are usually ones where the factory airbox is unnecessarily restrictive and slows the car down by starving it for air, in an attempt to make the car quieter. This car has a really good intake system stock, including the VFAD system to adjust the intake runner length depending on the engine speed. Mazda really had to give it everything it could to keep the power as high as possible.

But the noise is glorious and I'll never take it off!

It is all about the sound your looking for. The best way is to google or find you tube videos of intake installed and compare sounds. I have a RB intake. I got it for the stock look and I only hear it when I get on the throttle. I hate the constant idle buzz sound. Im happy and your not going to see a major HP increase at all. So shop for sound and look!

NgoRX8 09-23-2008 02:02 PM

can't really compare sounds over the internet. you really have to hear the different intakes in person.

I love the sound that the K&N gave me with my Rev8 exhaust, unfortunitally i get even worse MPGs now, its all worth it though :D

Contact BHR and get the AEM. It's the best of the bunch.

The HKS has a nice bling factor and probably is the most effective of the short ram series.

The problem comes into play if/when you start removing stock engine bay panels. The K&N only works if you keep all the panels intact but it still draws warm engine air into the intake.

Whatever gains you get from the K&N will probably be negated by the high intake air temps.

The AEM is molded to the stock intake tube size, comes in various nice colors and pulls in air very close to ambient temps. It's well worth the cash. I owned the K&N Typhoon for 40,000 miles and while I was happy with the intake I couldn't have my car tuned with it cause of the 150+ degree intake air temps.

Talk to Ray Hill @ BHR and he'll get you a great deal on an AEM.

Get AEM!!! thats what i have and ive had the k&n. The noise from that one gets really annoying after a while

em1turbo 09-30-2008 07:07 PM

how can i talk to ray hill at BHR? Anyone know the link to his profile?
