buying advice on rare rx8

My local dealer has a used '06 in the color i like (phantom blue) and it's automatic.
It has 5K miles on it, but also the appearance options, spoiler, power seats.

Typically, I've never had to have a certain car, and just found another similar somewhere else. But ..Searching on autotrader for phantom blue yeilds few results, a used '06 few results, and automatic makes this combo hard to find.

Value sites websites like nada, edmunds, kbb never have been able to give me a clear picture of what the value of a "used" new car is. In your opinion, how much does 5K mileage devalue a car from new price?

Raptor2k 09-05-2006 01:22 AM

AT? No. Hell no. Regardless of paint color.

That will be my contribution to this thread.

gotta agree with these guys. unless you have a good reason why you're not looking at manual.

cadagan 09-05-2006 02:15 AM

because i'm on the phone whenever i'm driving, so phone plus dinking around with blackberry emails while driving. anyways thanks for everyones answer.

toxin440 09-05-2006 02:20 AM

dude -- im happy you are considering an RX8, but i dont care HOW important you are for your job or whatever... i wouldnt wanna be driving MY rx8 around you if you are: on the phone, drinking coffee and playing with your crackberry....

at the VERY least go out and buy a wireless bluetooth headset before you go and buy an RX8. I talk on the phone when im driving but its always handsfree (yes I own an MT but thats beside the point)

The car isnt an office and all you are doing trying to juggle three things AND drive is endangering myself and other people/families on the road. If you are soley considering an AT becuase you do so much shit besides driving... when you are trying to drive, please go find a car you would be comfortable wrecking.

Hope i didnt bitch too hard there, but just have some common sense. (oh yes, if you get the AT, driving it will be no different then some cheap honda accord or something in the power dept)

Tamas 09-05-2006 02:21 AM

I hope you don't live anywhere nearby.
Using this gadgetry while driving should have been outlawed long ago everywhere.

cadagan 09-05-2006 02:25 AM

good for you. now aside from everyone's value judgements, does anyone know the answer to the question?

ya when you wreck make sure its into a pole and not another car

cadagan 09-05-2006 02:30 AM

I don't use a blackberry anymore, i rarely talk on the cell when driving. my reply was more facetious than anything. what does it matter why one wants something.

does anyone know the cost of apples?
why hell no, why would you want apples? apples are bad?

I applaud everyone in their helpfullness. nite.

chim-chim 09-05-2006 02:50 AM

cadagan if you want the auto, I say go for it. I own a mt but if you like the car and don't mind a considerable loss of power, then there is no reason why you shouldn't. Well at least the auto has a paddle shift attached to the wheel. One thing I would suggest is getting larger wheels if it comes with anything smaller than 18". The car just looks to big with 17" and smaller. :ylsuper:

CosmosMpower 09-05-2006 03:02 AM

1. Phantom blue is ugly and more or less green.

2. If you want an automatic you might as well go buy the 268hp V6 camry.

3. I'd try and find a new 05, hell I got a crazy discount on mine 5 months ago. They should be damn near free by now.

Squidward 09-05-2006 05:08 AM

there's more reason to own an RX8 than it's MT tranny. It's a unique car period...don't knock another person's color or transmission choice.

tellin' a person who doesn't want a GT to go buy a camry is just plain rude...

I mean, would you really want to own a camry over a phantom blue RX8?

^^ Well Said;

Cardagan:

That being said, we need a little more info to know what price would be good.

You said power seat, so I'm assuming it is a 06' AT Grand Touring (Leather seats, moonroof, Bose audio. )

Brand new it would MSRP for about 31K minus the $1500 rebate going on $29K
minus the 5K miles on it, minus the fact that the 07's are already comming out.

you could get that one for about 22-23K (anything more than 24K just walk away, you can buy a brand new base model for 24K)

If you are good at haggling you might be able to get it for 20-21, so 23k should be OTD, tax, tag, title and all.

Ericok 09-05-2006 08:06 AM

Since no one else will answer your question:

There's a blue '05 RX8 at a local dealer here with 9k miles on it and he's asking $19,995 (bizarrely, the ad doesn't indicate M/T or Auto). Kelley BB says '05 $18.6 to $21.6 for an automatic. So a used '06 would probably start at the upper range of the '05s (since the '07s are comming).

DMRH 09-05-2006 08:06 AM

With the exception of Chim Chim who made an attempt to provide a response, the rest of you guys really have assisted nothing to the original request except to re-enforce the "In your face & learn to love it" opinionated attitude the rest of the world have come to love about Americans...................... :puke:

The fact that Cadagan is at least interested in the RX-8 is a plus. The fact that typical over opinionated American attitude turns him away is all to common. This thread is only a small example of the many occurances I have read through this section over the last few years. You should all be very proud of your achievements......

:wallbash:

Cadagan. If the auto RX-8 suits your needs, go for it. Enjoy it as the RX-8 is a great car. Yes the manual is a better drive but a manual isn't for everyone all the time. De-valuation should be around 10% - 15% if the Aussie demo car pricing is anything to go by as they wil have around 2k - 5k km on their clocks when sold off.

WTH mate??!!??
Please don't generalize all of us AMERICANS into the troll category.

Just because we have a few 16 YO trolls in the forum doesn't mean evryone is like that.
Since you've already noticed the pattern of the place where the angry posts are comming from, also take the time to see that it is only 3 or 4 people that have nothing better to do than try to get their post count up.

You'll see that it is those people that need to eat the newbs for breakfast to feed their hungry egos the ones doing posts that add no value to the threads.

So please give th rest of us the benefit of the doubt. [ End RANT.cmd]

Sooo... How much is the dealer asking for the phantom??

It's not a rare color. It's a NEW color. There is a big distinction between the two. Because it just came out, it will be harder to locate, especially used. If you want rare, they only made Yellow the first year, so it's the oldest available and only used for one model year. But if you're going for rare in terms of units sold, that nordic green was not popular and was also discontinued.

Also it's more of a teal than blue.

Apologies. There are exceptions of course.

Perhaps the problem is the "Troll catergory" is a vocal minority & the decent people are a silent majority.......???

Decent people need to speak up & post more. Ignore the vocal minority pushing their ego' onto this forum & help out new guys asking worthy questions before the "trolls" start to ruin another thread.

Actually like that color.

when the '8's come out may have to look at a used 7

EDIT: wrong thread, like the strato blue

map 09-05-2006 11:39 AM

There are tons of phantom blues sitting on lots all over here. I think it's hard to find them used because no one buys them new in the first place.

Winfree 09-05-2006 12:07 PM

Don't let the troll's discourage you - some of them don't even own 8s!
Ill breeding isn't an American trait (but I'm afraid it's a trait too often tolerated).

If you find a rare 8 and, in actuallity, they are all rather rare - and you like the way it feels, buy it - make sure they do all the recall issues (you may be able to get a better engine free) and make sure that you get a good warrenty. Sounds like you found one with most of the bells and whistles. Test drive it and see if it fits!

Automatic transmission is fine. I still drive a Mazda 323 stickshift but when I wanted to drive in comfort, I found the automatic 8 - which also can be shifted with wheel paddles or used like a stick by pushing the stick into a manuel setting - gives one of the most pleasureable rides you can find anywhere. Check out the thread on "Little Things" to find out why people enjoy their 8s.

The trolls are inexperienced so they watch Fast and Furious movies for training - and think public streets are a drag strip!

They are correct in that the experience of speed is heady and if you are really into speed you will always want to add a hotter engine and then a hotter kit body and pretty soon you've lost the original

mdw1000 09-05-2006 12:29 PM

I have the 4speed auto and love it, except for the tall 1st gear. I'm guessing the 6-speed auto has corrected this.

I didn't buy the car for speed, I bought it for handling. It defintely handles better than a Camry :)

zeblien 09-05-2006 01:46 PM

Not to bust a bubble, but I am enjoying my 6speed AT 2006. It shifts well, performs fine. I dont know about the 4 speed auto though. Would guess not the best pick.

Razz1 09-05-2006 02:10 PM

I would think 25k at a dealership, maybe more.

try the thread on purchased vehicles and insurance.

Price depends upon where you live. So you need to post that.
