Broken Into
 

Got my car broken into last night, man that sucks had a lot of stuff in the trunk that got stolen. Some people. One of the things they stole were my insurance papers and I don't really know why. Identity theft or something?

Anyway the reason I write, other than to rant is that the way they broke in was pretty clever, in fact it took me a whole day to figure out how they did it. All they did was put some gooey type stuff in the key hole on the drivers side (maybe liquid nitrogen or something... I'm stuff guessing) which cracked the key hole and somehow unlocked the door.

Bright side: Window isn't broken
Down side: Costs an extra $100 to fix than a broken winshield.

I'll take some pics if anyone is interested. They did the same thing to my glove box, which is how they unlocked the trunk to get back to all the good stuff. Kinda paranoid that they have my home address though (taking insurance papers and all) hope they don't come break in cause they found a goldmine of stuff in my car.

Moral of the story, don't just leave valuables out of sight and locked in a seperate compartment. Don't leave anything in your vehicle.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Hope all ends up well. If you also had Credit Card info with your insurance papers, I'd get on the phone. I would also inform the insurance company if it was life insurance papers. Some carry cash values and if they can find a way to cash them in, they will.

you may want to contact the credit bureaus ... you can have lenders contact you at home before granting credit.

I would call as many people as possible, credit card companies, insurance company, police, the last thing you need is some low life using your identity.

Gosh, sorry to hear that...

I'd keep a lookout for strange people or cars around your neighborhood...just in case, and as they have told you. Call everyone you can and place a "credit alert" on your credit just in case. They will monitor your credit for you...just in case.

How did they get into your trunk by accessing the inside of the glove box? There is a switch there to enable/disable the remote function, but no way to unlock the trunk from there. ?????

I had the trunk switch turned off for security. Im assuming they couldnt get in pushing the button (or didn't know where the button was at first). Anyway I guess he just got in there turned it back on and found the trunk release.

Did the alarm go off at all during all of this?

Usually, insurance papers have your address on it. If you park in a regular spot every day, you are probably not home. Some lowlife now has your home address. I don't want to worry you or anything, but it may be prudent to take extra precautions at home..... like getting a 100 lb dog.
I never leave papers with my address in the car. It sucks to carry it all in the wallet and have to hand it over everytime someone borrows the car, but these days, you never know.

(Probably slightly off topic..) but you said "and found the trunk release".. I didn't even know there WAS an interior trunk release. Where is it?

right above the hood release. there's also an off button in the glovebox to disable it.

Was it in Surrey? Man I hated living in Van. Got my car broken into twice. And apparently Surrey is the car-theft capital of North America. So many frickin' sketchy people in the Vancouver area.

Nope not in Surrey, although you are right it was named Car theft capital of North America. It was actually broken in to in one of the more affluent areas of Vancouver. Which is pretty funny because I live on the border of the Downtown East Side, Vancouver (and Canada's) drug and property crime capital.

Why do I live there one might ask? The average 1 bdrm condo in Vancouver is well over $200,000. I wanted to buy my first home, and I got a super nice place, just in a bad area for $175,000.

Went to the adjuster today, there's a big dent in the door from his screwdriver so they're repainting the whole door, replacing the lock, replacing the door handle, replacing the glove box (got smashed up), replacing my center console (idiot thief couldn't figure out how to open it) and changing some panelling on my overhead reading lights that he so gracefully turned on using his screwdriver.

Yeah, the police actually told me they usually steal your insurance papers, then recreate transfer documents and find a buyer for the vehicle. Once they have someone who wants to see the vehicle they come and steal it and illegally sell it to some poor schmuck how just paid $30,000 for a vehicle that the next time he goes through a traffic stop will be confiscated by police.

I'm just hoping the jackass steals my car before I have to pay the $300 insurance deductible when I take my car to the autobody shop on friday.

HA! I've been using the keyfob/key to open the trunk because I didn't know there was an internal release. :p

all i can say is wow...

if he knew about the trunk lock switch in the glovebox, he must've known some things about the RX8. you know anyone that has a grudge against you??

Wouldn't the alarm sound or does unlocking the door with a screwdriver disarm it???
