Blown engine
 

I just called mazda. The wifes rx8 Apex seal is shot.....:mad: ( bank 3 lean error code ) It will need a new... I mean... REMANUFACTURED!!! engine.

At least it is still under warranty.

Anybody driven the new MX-5? maybe time to trade?

2004 AT GT
30,000 miles

not going to get much of a trade-in value on a 2004 AT with a new engine.

I'm on engine #3. First 2 were from Mazda Japan. The present one, a reman unit, seems to be holding up well.

It's not going to get any higher that is for sure.... and we only owe a little on it.

How many people have had multiple engines replaced?


Thank god we are not upside down on this car.

I'm going to look into the MX-5 and maybe the 350z and get out while I can.

Do all you multiple engine people have 2004's?

The MX-5 is a nice car and one of the most reliable sports cars you can get, small though.

The 350Z's next generation sounds much better then the current, may want to wait on this one.

Also I guess you haven't been listening to the Fan-boys here. Your engine didn't fail, it is all in your imagination.:lol:

I'm on my original engine. Dec 2003 manufacture date. Bought the car new in April 2004 with 7 miles on the odo. Been turbocharged for just a hair under 20,000 miles. 51k total miles.

MT of course.

Mazda had to replace the engine in my '99 Miata. ENGINE FAILURE! ENGINE FAILURE! Damn, unreliable Mazda!!!

yeah i have a 2004 AT too. and i just took mine in and im getting a new motor at 43,000 miles

I remember that... I bought a 2000 Miata SE, but I was close to buying a 1999 10AE until I found out about the bearing problem. They replaced a s'load of Miata engines that year.

Well, that was a mechanical problem the found pretty quickly.


How long has Mazda been trying to fix the Rotary?

Still trying, latest bulletin has them decarbing the engine.

How many more flashes did you go through on your Miata? How was the resale value?

Sorry for you luck - I looked at the retractable hardtop MX5 the other day, she was a sweet car. I would go that route instead of the 350Zhit

Please… there's a big difference between fixing something that's broken—and making something that's good… better.

After 40 years, I think it's safe to say the rotary is not something that needs to be "fixed". As evidenced in numerous published, long-term road tests, Renesis reliability is about the same as other engines, if not better. Consumer Reports just added the 8 to its list of "Recommend Cars," which must be average or better in reliability.

Saying ECU reflashes—or changes in OMP design—prove that "Mazda has been trying to fix the rotary" is like saying auto makers' development of fuel injection "proved" that carburated engines were a poor design. That wouldn't be a fair statement; fuel injection—and thousands of other little improvements—simply made good engines… better. Get it?

They are making the Rotary design better by putting out a TSB to clean them all out?

What are they doing to prevent the problem from occuring again?

Sorry for the loss though, get it fixed and keep it. You will put yourself through more trouble by going through the process of buying another car.
