Bike racks for the 8?
 

Here's my situation. I bought the RX-8 in the fall and at that time gave my 02 Nissan Sentra Spec V to my 17 yr old son. The plan was to have 2 cars in the house...one to do the work and one just for fun. Well he had an accident and wrote off the Spec V just before Xmas (freezing rain/learning experience) so now the car that could carry 4 downhill bikes and skis and snowboards is now gone. We will likely get another car to replace it but in the meantime I am wondering if I can do any hauling with the 8? Are there any thule or other maker roof racks that can carry my road bike? Went to the Thule site and the search came up zero.

There is a search feature for a reason. Use it.

Thanks Mr. Crankypants...I did use the search and it gives me links to Yakima racks but when I go to the Yakima website and do the fitment function it tells me that there are no racks to fit the RX-8. The same for Thule. That's why I asked for help from the forum members with information in this area....:yesnod:

I have a yakima rack that I bought form a forum member on the cheap, so I don't know exactly what the P/Ns are for everything

Thanks Lord....okay, that just sounds weird....so I wonder why they make you build it from scratch but then list the car on their drop down menu but results show it as a no match? I can imagine that they lose an awful lot of sales this way?

Ya know, in the short time I have been on this forum I have noticed that there is considerable bashing for anyone who asks a question that may or may not have been asked previously....SEARCH! Every freaking question has been asked before...thats what forums are for! Problem is when you search you get an avalanche of information that you can take half a day sifting through or a nice member can just answer your question in 2 minutes. Forums are all about question and answer and a lot of it is repetitive and bashing members and telling them to search is counterproductive IMHO. I have spent a lot of hours on bicycling forums, speed, hayabusa, nissan, gixxer and many many other forums and I have never come across so much negativity in relation to members responding to questions. Is this condition contagious?

Unfortunately, it is contagious. TeamRX8 had a great post about why that is.
Don't let it bother you. In the end, the person who made the original post usually gets the info they seek.

I'd much rather you spend half of your day learning about your car while you search for answers, than waste half of my day spoon feeding you answers that i spent the time to research myself.

Usually it isn't just one answer. More questions follow that require more answers. In the end, it would have been easier and quicker for the newb to just search and learn something along the way.

No offense but BS. Don't answer the thread if you don't want to waste your time communicating with someone who doesn't know everything about every subject. You are not required to respond to every thread on the forum are you? Just keep on drivin....

the problem is just as you clearly stated :

so what you have effectively done is, instead of taking and building on whatever current threads are available, you instead have added to the avalanche. Congrats ... you are now part of the problem.

Yes, I agree that there is now another bike rack thread and that doesn't help much when someone does a search but the point is more about the negative feedback members get on this specific forum. As I said, I have been on a lot of forums and they aren't like this when it comes to the negativity and I have to wonder what it is about this forum that makes it this way?

^Because, the rotary engine is unique, and not everyone can explain it.
Hence, we get a LOT of questions, by people who DEMAND info, without putting in the least effort.
It gets old quickly.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I had some knowledge before hand (and I am still learning!), but I spent my time off reading up on issues, maintenance, etc.
If you feel you don't have the time to read up, then this is what you have to (unfortunately) deal with. Consider it constructive criticism.


EDIT: Learning to search properly is also EXTREMELY helpful! Click the "Google" link in my sig, and learn a more efficient way of searching. Just change the KEY WORDS

Hmmm....okay, this forum is based around a car that has a different type of engine from most any other car, I will give you that. Aside from the engine though it isn't different from any other car on the market. I don't think it is a reasonable answer to the attitudes on this forum. Maybe I'm wrong?:scratchhe

This is a great idea. Maybe we should all stop responding to questions. The newbs will just keep bumping their post looking for answers, to questions that we are all ignoring. While they do that and we ignore it, the still add to the avalanche of bullshit for the people who actually take their time to search have to search for.

Do we expect everyone to know everything? No. Do we expect people to do a little work on their end to find an answer? Yes.

This is a tight knit community for a niche market car. When i came to this forum as a newb, I figured my questions have been answered already. It was a 5 year old car (at the time of my newbness) and by looking around i realized that people had broken and fixed pretty much everything at this point, so i just read, searched, and read some more. I realize that not everyone is like me, but it doesn't take much common sense to figure it out. Maybe we just hold owners to a much higher standard than we should. Now that it's cheap enough for little ricer kids to afford as a first car it's going to get worse. Maybe we should lower our standards and turn into a civic forum. Wait, they still tell people to get bent and search too. :dunno:

Few things are as frustrating as searching through threads for literally hours (the "fog lights" was my favorite) when someone can answer your question in two minutes. Which I try to do whenever I can.

^Hey Fuz, you can do whatever you want. I'm just making an observation about this forum and if you are comfortable with the way its possibly perceived as being very negative to new members then thats your right to feel that way. I don't take it personally but some might so I am just bringing it to light. This forum isn't quite as special as you might think and there are plenty of great forums out there with friendly long term members. Just sayin.

I answer a lot of questions for people on here. I also tell a lot of people to search. I even combine the two more often than not. It can be hostile for newbs that don't search. I've seen better and i've seen a lot worse. It's a public forum. People should expect anything when coming in the door. If they can't handle it, it's on their shoulders, not mine. The only hostility i've ever had towards me was really just newbs bitching. I've never started a new post to ask a question that has already been answered though. I guess that's just how it works.

Personally, i do not mind answering a question a million times especially if I really know the answer.

However, there was this guy not too long ago claiming that he couldn't find a price quote for an RX-8 clutch anywhere online. Well, that's just crazy. Come on!!!!

dude, i'm just giving you shit. I get your point, and i'm answering your question honestly.

zilvia, evolutionm, nasiaoc, bimmerforums, and rx7club are just some of the ones that will tear into newbs for asking questions that have already been asked over and over.

I'm not saying that every new post deserves a "search newb," but when people ask "what mods," intake or exhaust threads, oil threads, guinness on my dipstick, will x fit, how much for a turbo, what about this swap...i could go on, it gets a really old. If you hang around and do your due diligence, you'll see what some of us see. You'll also see that it isn't as hostile as you think and when you really have a question, or need help, there will be plenty of people giving advice, or even coming over to lend a hand.

We're a little rough around the edges, but pretty damn nice once you get to know us.

Okay, I'm letting it go now. I may be new to this forum but I have been spending time on car/motorcycle/bicycle forums since the internet was invented so I think I speak from experience. I am also very sure there are some really great members on here that I will get to know as time goes by and I look forward to learning as much about my 8 as possible....EVEN IF I HAVE TO SEARCH!:mdrmed:
