bike rack for my 8

i struggled between the subaru wrx wagon and the rx8. i am a mountain biker and a runner so naturally, the subaru would be the ideal car for me, but after test driving the 8, it was all over....

anyway, i don't want a roof rack for my rx8 because it will exacerbate the terrible gas mileage. will a hitch work? if it does, does it work well?

never heard of a hitch for an 8, thats something new on my part. Umm, don't take this the wrong way but the subaru would of been a better choice. But yeah, only thing i know for the 8 would be the tow hook, never heard of a hitch though someone on the forum put a tire rack on the 8.

yeah, the subaru was really nice, but the 8 was a lot more fun to drive. plus my wife has a honda accord and plans to get an suv sometime in the future so we'll use that for our outdoor excursions. thanks for your help.

Do a search for "Bike Rack". There have been many discussions on this topic. I'm interested in your decision so I will keep watching this thread.

yeah, i've been reading a lot about the cx7. sounds like it's going to be a great vehicle.

They make a "hidden hitch" for the miata, so I can't imagine why not one for the 8.
Then just slap a hitch-mount rack on it, soft-ride etc. Only problem could be ground clearance when going in and out of gutters/driveways, and also a big ol' heavy rack like a soft-ride would not do much for your 50/50 weight distribution.

Why not just get a trunk mounted rack? They make them these days with all sorts of rubber on them, so you dont need to worry about scratching your beloved 8.

imo, i would get one for your wifes car and not put the 8 in jeopardy at all.

I wonder how a trunk rack would work if he has a spoiler. I have a spoiler, so naturally I'm curious. Maybe somebody can provide an answer.

I have a trunk rack with the mazdaspeed spoiler. Unfortunately the rack does bump against the spoiler while driving. This is after I have angled the rack up as high as I could while still being stable. Also, at this angle, I would not take it on the highway as I think either the rack would fly off, or my spoiler will get damaged.

I forgot to add that w/o a spoiler the rack would work 100% no problems.

I got a cheapo "Bell" trunk mount rack at Wally World.... I have the standard RX-8 spoiler (not MS) and it works just fine. My bike is kind of heavy by today's standards (aluminum frame Raleigh - about 15 or so years old). The only problem I had was when I put my wife's bike on along with mine - her bike has a steel frame (she doesn't ride much) and it's a lot heavier than mine. Both of those bikes together were flexing the trunk lid more than I thought was acceptable....

So, I only take my 8 when I'm riding by myself. However, two modern, lighter-weight bikes might be just fine.... JM2CW.

Pics! Need Pics installed and with the bike on it. Where did you get them and how much did it cost.
