Ok I have had my 8 for a few months now and heres a few questions I have.

1: Whats the importance of reving the engine before shutting down? Is it necessary every time?

2: Is it OK to use octane boost / fuel system cleaner or fuel injector type additives?


3: Cant charge my cell phone unless the powers on. I have had 3 other cars in my life and you could always charge through the lighter when the car was off......any info?

If your cig lighter works when the car is off, thats a problem. Its a 12v ACC lead that should only go on if the ignition is on..

Octane boost will give you no results as they only give you a few 'points' meaning. from 89.0 to 89.5 octane.. Fuel cleaners are OK..

Revving the engine is primarily if you are shutting down cold which you shouldn't do anyway.
A quick blip of the throttle before shut down will help burn up any remaining fuel in the engine..

1. You don't have to do that. I'm not sure if it does anything useful on modern cars - or if it does any harm.

2. Buy name brand gas of the proper octane rating. Don't fill up if there's a tanker at the station making a delivery.

3. Take longer drives, so your cell phone will have time to charge.

1: You only need to rev the engine if you shut it down when it is not completely warmed up. It helps prevent flooding.

2: You can but why. The rotary runs best on 87 octane and fuels today have cleans included. Save your money.

3: Not sure on this one.

That's not necessarily true for everyone. My car pings on 87. I run 89 usually, except for the extreme heat of summer, then it's 93.

For additives, I use Yamaha Ring Free every few tankfulls to help keep carbon buildup away. I'd say most additives are safe. Octane boosters don't actually boost octane significantly, so save your money on that stuff.

I'm happy it doesnt work when the car is off.. I'm constantly forgetting to disconnect my radar detector lol...

1. This was mainly for the turbocharged rotaries of yesteryear to cool the oil after driving and you don't rev, just idle it to cool it down. The revving right before shutoff wil help prevent flooding slightly but on a newer Rx-8 flooding shouldn't be a major problem to worry about unless you are really rough on your enine.

3. Charge it at home/work. You don't need it in the car anyway, it annoys other drivers. (Road and Track reported on a study by The Hagerty Cllector Network on the top 10 pet peeves. The #1 most annoying thing to drivers was "other drivers on cell phones.")

This is for Previous rotary powered cars. It is reccomended that the Rx-8 use 93 octane for its higher compression(10:1) rotors. Turbocharged (FD) Rx-7s with any modification should run 93 as well. Stock FDs and lightly modded Turbo FCs should run 89. And Stock Turbo FCs, N/A FCs, Sa-20, Sa-15s, Rx-4s, Rx-3s, and Rx-2s should all run 87.

Thanks all....I appreciate the feedback as always. Not sure about charging at home though.....always on the go and dont really care what other drivers think. Im nt an offensive driver anyway and I use my phone for work so no luck there. The NY state law was created for the same reason the country has a speed limit...........for that 10% who just cant do it right.....hehe

Many of us use 87. It varies from person to person because each engine is unique and your geographical location (temps) differ.

The RX-8 manual recommends 93, but does not state that it is required. Given that the manual is meant to be clear, and is used across all the states, it must go by highest common denominator.

Unless you are experiencing pinging the use of 93 or 89 octane is a waste of money. The rotary engine by the nature of its combustion chamber runs better on lower octane fuel and the RX-8 is no exception. I have experienced no difference in performance from one to the other and have seen slightly better fuel economy with 87 oct. If you do a search you will find that some very knowledgeable people on this board are in agreement on this.

You are correct that the octane requirements will increase with FI but for stock engine most find 87 works very well.

Ok, that's a new one on me. What's the problem if there's a delivering tanker?
