In all seriousness, only you know what works best for you. Some love the auto, some won't buy an auto. If it fits your lifestyle best and you like the way it drives, who cares what anyone else thinks?

I guess what I'm saying is DRIVE it.

Why not? Can't you tell them most of your friends can't drive stick, which will in turn keep your friends from driving your car?

My mom didn't want me to buy the manual and I asked why, she said because then she wouldn't be able to drive it.... so I chose the manual :D

How old are you? Are they paying for the car or insurance?

I chose the 6spd just so my friends wouldn't ask to take it for a spin.

But I second Eric's advice, go what's best for you!

Also, what everyone here knows, but is not saying, you get MORE HORSEPOWER with the MT. (maybe you should leave that part out with your Mom!)

I never drove the auto, so I don't know, but my salesman told me that every single buyer he has had that drove both, ended up buying the MT.

I have loved every minute - just have this non-stop grin while I'm driving it......

I was going to mention the additional horse power too! Wasn't sure if eMOOtional was sharing this with the parents.

I have a MT, but test drove both before purchasing. I like them both. I bought the car mostly for the unique look, not the HP. This is my first car that is a stick, and honestly, I don't care for driving stick that much. I almost wish I bought the auto. I have even been mulling over selling mine and getting an auto. For me, this car is all about the style, not the HP. Do what you like and don't worry about what others think. Buy the car with the features that make you happy...that's all that matters.

If you commute back and forth from home to school/work and you have a lot of stop and go traffic, then I suggest getting the auto. Otherwise insist on the manual, there's nothing like rowing your own gears in between revving to 9k redline! :D

On the RX-8, you definitely have to go with stick. What's the point of having a rotary if you can't enjoy the 9K redline :)

my situation is not much different.... my mom put the car in her name for insurance purposes, but only said she would do that for me if its a car she can drive. (she is still scared to drive the car even though its an auto), and my other reason for wanting to go auto is i drive in brooklyn and manhatten, and clutchin through trffic isn't my idea of fun. I find i say more to\imes to myself thank god i got the auto then i find mtyselkf on an open road wishing i got the stick, cause the car is still fun in auto. i suggest that if you will be driving in traffic alot then go for the auto, and please your parents. if you are going to drive on open raods all the time i would fight them and get a stick. Remember the engine is the same, its the drivetrain where you lose the power, and that transmission will be shot soon after the warrenty goes. repolace that transmission then, when you are a little older and out of the at risk age for insurance companies, and have fun then.

My parents will probably pay for the car and i will pay for insurance. My parents think i will die if i get a manual and they all said that it is a pain sometimes.

We have a lot of "fortunate" young members here who have their parents paying for an RX-8. I wish I were so lucky. My first car when I turned sixteen back in 1991 was a $500 1987 Mitsubishi Mirage. And I've paid for every car I've owned.

My first car in 1989 was a 1980 rabbit diesel I bought with my job at fast food joint for $500. It did get kick ass gas mileage, but man, now that look back, other then a YUGO, I had one of the crappiest, slowest cars out there. Parents are buying you an rx8? Man, we do have some spoiled young SOB'S on this board no doubt. They are definitely paying insurance on it, and they actually will own car, not you, so I guess it's not officially/legally yours, and they can also take it away from you at any time. Still, you are spoiled rotten, and I am jealous, because I was lucky if my dad even let me drive his brand new car, let alone something as nice as an rx8. I'd be happy with auto, because what they say goes, and it's really not your car, so just be thankful you are spoiled, and enjoy. :)

I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure that I would buy my kid a new sports car. I started driving old large American cars. My older brother bought an '80 RX-7 (in '86). I recall driving it and having people say, "Nice daddy's car!". "No! Brother's car!". I later bought the RX-7 and abused it some. I didn't have the money to properly take care of the body... (had two hit and runs, didn't have a garage to park in). I later sold it as a parts car. Being 16 - 17 with a new sports car is a lot of responsibility. Not to mention the insurance rates...

I'm driving an old 1989 Toyota Cressida now. No wrecks and no tickets for about 2 years now(a hard thing to do in TX.) Tx drivers are so stupid. I think I proven myself that I can avoid accidents and not cause them too. They even let me drive their new 2003 4runner once in a while.

I've driven stick all my life ( I'm 49). This time around I had to go with AT because of back/leg problems. I actually enjoy the 8 more because I have more time to enjoy it WHILE driving. Instead of expending time and energy on the clutch, strick and tack, I can savour the 8's MANY more subtle qualities.

Not the same engine. the 6-speed has 6 intake valves... the auto has 4. correct me if I'm wrong.

I totally agree. Some of these insurance payments these guys are posting are as much as some car payments. $5000 a year for insurance on an RX-8 for a 16-17 y/o! I could lease a fully loaded 2004 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro for less than that!
