Auto-lock feature override?

Ok, here is the problem, then i'll get to the question. tonight it was sleeting outside. So i go to my car turn it on, get out close the door the scrap my windows. Go to get back in, damn the doors are locked!!! i guess when u turn the car on, it auto locks the doors. Does anyone know how to override this? my old car would lock the doors too, but not until the car started moving. i just want to know if there is a way to turn the feature off??? thanx for any help...

The RX-8 does not have an auto-lock function, except that if the doors are unlocked by the remote but are not opened within a couple of minutes, they will automatically re-lock.

Perhaps you accidentally pressed the lock button on the armrest as you were climbing out of the car.

It has some kind of auto lock function. I know when I unlock using the remote, then open my trunk, then close the trunk, the doors automatically lock.

I fear one day I will put my keys down in the trunk while I put in or take out something, slam the trunk w/ my keys in there, and have the doors lock.

If I unlock the doors, I want them unlocked. If I accidently close my trunk w/ the keys in there, my doors should still be open so that I can pop the trunk from the inside.

Somebody was doing too much thinking at Mazda :p

Are you sure the doors lock as you close the trunk, or do the lights flash and you find that the doors are locked? I believe you're actually experiencing the following sequence of events:

You unlock the doors with the remote.
You open the trunk with the remote or the key.
You take more than a couple of minutes to load the trunk, during which time the doors automatically relock because neither door was opened. However, because the trunk is open, the alarm does not rearm, thus the lights do not flash.
When you close the trunk, the alarm rearms and the lights flash to indicate this fact.
(Note that the indicator flash shows that the alarm has been armed (or disarmed), not that the doors have been locked (or unlocked), and the alarm does not arm if the hood, trunk, or either door is ajar.)

Next time you do this, try opening a door after loading the trunk but before you close the lid; I bet you'll find that the doors have relocked while you were futzing around in the trunk, not when you closed it.

The solution, if you insist on unlocking the doors before loading the trunk, is to actually open one of them, which will prevent them relocking. Close it again if you don't want to leave it open.

And if you really want to avoid all risk of locking your keys in the trunk, use the key to open the trunk and leave it in the lock until you shut the lid. :)

i think the doors locked because the car wasn't on...as stated above, if you unlock the doors via remote and don't turn the car on, after a few minutes it will autolock...if you unlock the doors via remote, turn the car on, the doors will not autolock...i know because i need to warm up my car in Chicago...i unlock via remote, turn the car on, get the scraper from the trunk and scrape my windows...it takes a few minutes and the doors have never locked on me

you may still be right as perhaps i wasn't out long enough for it to autolock but i don't think that's the case

The manual states that if you remotely unlock the doors and do not open a door within (I don't know, 30-45 sec), the doors will automatically relock. I believe this is what's happening in these cases.

Yeah, it's page 3-4 and it's 30 seconds.

As well, the doors will lock when you close the trunk. It takes 10 secs. or so. If you open them before they lock, then they don't.

??? if it doenst have an auto-lock feature then how come whenever i get in the car and drive someone somewhere, to drop them off, they have to unlock thier door to get out? i'll have to check it again, i could swear that after i start my car, a few seconds later i hear the doors lock, and i know when i have a passenger, they have to unlock the doors to get out.....

Auto lock

This may have nothing to do with it but.... I locked my keys in the car 3 times, luckily the window was open each time. The 4th time I finally figured out what was happening, I was hitting the manual lock button with my hand as I pushed the door open. I pulled the inside handle and my knuckle would lock the door as I pushed it. Check it out you'll see what I mean.

I thought for sure the car had some form of Auto-lock.

Perhaps your dealer installed an aftermarket module - the standard RX-8 certainly does not do that.
