i am assuming that the rear windows will now be opening vertically instead of venting?

and i will have auto up and down on my 04 once i put in the viper alarm and remote start, with the windows module

edit:

whoops i am an idiot. i just saw that this was for the mazda 6, not the rx-8. :o

If im not mistaken, atleast in Canada, auto up windows are illegal. Thats pretty much the reason you never see them on vehicles. Its not exactly a difficult feature to put in a car, but you dont want junior hanging his head out the window, then oopsie, hitting the auto up button and instant decapitation.

I know thats an exhageration ( sp? ), but basically thats the gist of why its not legal. So small kids cant suffocate I believe.

Toyota Sienna has auto-up, I believe. The window switch usually requires you to pull up on the switch to close the window. A kid would not be able to close the window unless it was on purpose.

Just keep the "window lock" feature when kids are in the car. LOL

reading through that list,... didn't there use to be a keyless start on the list?

Even the new Ford Mustang has auto up and down. So does the Honda Accord. And the Toyota Sienna as it was pointed out. Basically, a ton of cars do have this feature. My wife's earlier car, a 1998 VW Passat had it as well.
So honestly, the fact that the RX-8 does not have this - on both doors, auto up and down - is really lame. Shame on Mazda.... after all, this car is (or was?) supposed to be their flagship model or what...

The "up" on the 8 might not be auto, but at least its fast. My Lexus has auto up but they are sloooowww. When it's pouring rain, fast is a better feature than auto.

Yea I agree with you guys, our windows move up and down pretty quick. It'll help you when you get pulled over and have illegal tints. HAHA

i've been in bmw's for the past 5 years and i can't believe the rest of the world hasn't caught up. The single most annoying feature of my RX is the stupid non-auto up feature. I also dont like how nothing opens from the key. :rolleyes

Some of the high end luxury cars have a "Tunnel" button: Hit the button and all the windows and sunroof close, air goes to recirc .

I have a nissan pathfinder that was built for the canadian market, it has auto up/down.

also as someone that has had his hand stuck in power windows many times (lol) i can tell you it pinches a little, but far from taking of a finger, let alone a head. Could choke you though....especialy a kid

i know in the miata, it was as simple as wiring in some resistors into the car....maby you could swap out the button completly or just rewire it to match.

I dont care about auto up so much, I do like the auto down though.

Auto up is very nice to have when you're leaving the toll booth and have to hold on to the stupid button to roll up the window while you'd need two hands to steer and shift as well. I only have two hands, unfortunately
Of course not having the auto up/down on both windows is not critical - but it definitely would be a nice-to-have feature. It would cost next to nothing for Mazda, yet adds a bit more 'complete' feel to the car.
The fact that they even omitted the auto down on the passenger side is just such a cheap move.

Is the "auto" mechanism a function of just the switch, or the power window motor also? Would it be possible to replace the passenger window switch with an "auto" one? If there's more involved, does anyone know what it would take to make the passenger window "auto-down" like the driver side?

The window switches send signals to a chassis computer (usually called a BCM - body control module) which have internal relays that power the window motors either up or down.

I guess in order to make auto up & down for both sides a reality, one would have to put two-or-three-step switches for all the windows and then reprogram the BCM.

In other words, it's not an easy task. You're better off sending a letter to Mazda.

Mazda could probably reprogram it, if they wanted, to raise the window if it was down by using the existing switch. The auto-down switch position could likely be changed to toggle the motor to raise or lower the window. I don't know if that could be done by a third party.

One of my engineering professors worked on auto-up windows (it's primarily a controls - as in feedback loop - problem). You need a sensor in place in order to implement it safely.

Auto-up is great. Waay better than holding the button up. Especially equipped on all 4 windows, like my G35 Sedan. Just touch (goes up quick) and get back to driving. Very handy if you are a little busy like shifting.
I wish my RX-8 had auto up (only two windows) or auto close for the moonroof. I hope Mazda considers auto-up in future RX-8s because the feature really allows you to resume driving attention quicker.
