Anyone have their oil pan rust out? I sure did!

The last few weeks I've noticed an oil stain appear on my driveway... Thinking its your typical leak with a seal starting to go bad, I thought I'd wait till a nice warm day to get under and clean it up.

So that day was today... wiping the oil off of the pan and the cross member, I noticed that the source of the leak wasn't very apparent. Nothing near the seal, bolts, nothing... The pan had surface rust with some bubbling, nothing I haven't really seen before.

I get a wire brush and start removing anything that was easily just brushed away... Then I noticed this "scab" of rust that kept leaking oil (slowly - but fast in terms of leaky oil)... just like if you sorta ripped a scab off your knee but it was still attached.

Unfortunately nothing is open today so I can't order in a new pan until tomorrow, then who knows how long it will take to get here!

Wonder If i can go another few days driving before it pops a huge hole out the bottom

Thta's really strange considering how good oil is at displacing water and thereby preventing rust. Perhaps a latent defect in the pan?

Oh well, good opportunity to replace with a Greddy high flow oil pan: http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/g...3-p-23046.html

Here it is after some "repair" work. Just wanted to see if I could stop it from leaking on the driveway for the next couple days without having to remove the oil or pan.

As you can see it doesn't work too well :)

thats nasty.

My God! The poor pan has cancer. I don't think it'll be worth any attempt to save this patient.

put her down, put the damn thing down.

Well that sucks...

Should be able to find a used pan cheap from somebody that installed an aftermarket one on here...

Just get a new one. You're going to have to do the labor anyway (or pay for the labor anyway), so you might as well install a pan that hasn't had a hard day in its life.
