Anyone Doing Seat Mods?

I tend to sit pretty upright and my head hits the roof. Has anyone taken the seats apart to see if there is a way of lowering them an inch or two?

ppowell 06-08-2004 01:04 AM

Good Question!!! I am 5'10" and with my seat on the lowest setting, my head is only about an inch from the roof! Wondering how anyone 6' or over sits comfortably? I know the moon roof takes away a couple of inches, but geez!

Mistryl 06-08-2004 01:06 AM

i'm 6'1, have power seats and moonroof, and i'm fine...not leaning back or anything either

thew 06-08-2004 01:07 AM

I am 6'1 seat all the way down and back !

my head has about half an inch before it hits the trim around the moon roof. it is tough.. Now how the hell do i get on a helmet to auto x in it like this :(

That's exactly the main reason to get the sport package only :D

BernieB 06-08-2004 07:24 AM

Lots of comments; any solutions?

Yup, that's what I did. I'm 6'2" and I can wear a helmet and still clear the roof.

alphapenguin 06-08-2004 08:47 AM

that's interesting, I am 6', and I have no problems with head room (no slouching either, you'll end up looking like a hunchback one day). I have the GT packagae, and I dont put the seat all the way back. Do you guys that have issues with the head room sit up right like at a formal dinner or something?

Buckeye3d 06-08-2004 09:50 AM

I'm 6'2" and have about an inch of headroom in my GT 8. I sit in the proper driving position. Not super upright and not way back. Works fine for everyday driving. I'm very comfortable. I could not wear a helmet though and sit in my normal position.

speedsector 06-08-2004 10:08 AM

same reason why i got the sport package. wish they had the GT package minus the moonroof.

When I wear a helmet I have to put the seat back one click.

I am 6'2" , have the sunroof and do not lay back and have no headroom issues!, but i am all Legs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They do.

In Canada, that is. :p Here, the sunroof is an option on the GT package - my car has the GT package without the sunroof.

Gordon

I REALLY wish we could get the GT with the NAV system, SANS moonroof. I love the gizmo factor of the navigation system, but really do NOT want the moonroof. Who makes these packaging decisions, anyway? :D

Well... thanks for calling me (and so many others) stupid. You obviously cannot fathom that some people might have different viewpoints or even needs than you. For one, I would NOT fit into the car with the moonroof because I'm 6' 6" tall. However, I fit just fine in the sport package-equipped one.
But let's see how does the GT have "extras that are too much for the price". The price of the GT package is $4000, sport package (that has the xenon lights, DSC/traction control, LSD, larger wheels, brakes and sport suspension) is $1200. So there is $2800 premium for the GT, and that is for stuff that is not even going to make the car handle or drive better.
What exactly do you get that makes this amount worthwhile? Leather? Yes, that is nice to have... but I got aftermarket two-tone leather that is much nicer than stock, and it was $1138 out the door. So let's just add leather and (generously) deduct $1200 from the difference, that makes it $1600. What remains as extra that justifies $1600?
The Bose stereo? No way... I like the fact that I can much easier upgrade the system, and the Bose sounds pretty crappy anyway. So, that has 0 extra value in my book.
As mentioned, the moonroof is 0 value for me (and probably for many others too, for similar reasons).
What we have left is:
- the Homelink / auto-dimming mirror which is nice but hardly essential... if I wanted to, I could probably add one for $150 or so.
- the power seat which, IMO, is really just gonna add weight since I adjust my seat once and then hardly ever after that. So why the power gizmos? The one thing I wish it had is the lumbar adjustment, so I give you that, but that's it. Even without the lumbar adjustablity, the seat is very comfortable.
- heated seats? Well, personally I don't need them, but could have added this when my new leather upholstery was done. Dunno how much would that cost, but it certainly not several hunderd dollars...
- heated mirrors? OK, that is kinda cool, but not exactly something I can't live without (I'm in California)

And that's pretty much it... So you can see that paying extra $1600 for these is really not worth - and I'm sure I'm not the only one seeing it this way.

Resale value anyway..
Resale value? I hardly think that the extra the GT stuff costs will be paid by the next buyer. Usually, you don't get even close the value of all the extras when you sell the car. Especially...

when i trade mine in for the 2005
...if you are going to trade in your 2004 RX-8 for the 2005 model, then it is you who is stupid... you'll be seriously raped with the trade-in value you'll receive from the dealer. The $ amount you'll lose in this transaction is tremendous.
But do whatever you think is best...

I don't think so...

I was simply trying to say that the options you get for the GT package are an excallant value.
I know you were... and I was trying to illustrate exactly that IMO it is not., depending on someone's priorities and viewpoint, of course.

P.S you are assuming that i paid $4000.00 extra for my GT..

and yes Options always add more to the price of a resale . even to the Dealer.. but again.. who said i was going to trade my car into the Dealer ? If i was to get a 2005 I would order it and sell my car on the street.. Much better way to make top dollar.

P.S. I think you left out the TPMS, Drivers adjustable seat.. (wicxh is the only reason i can fit.. I am not sure if you seat sit lower than mine. but with the power seat i have to set it all the way down. Yes i would have loved to have gotten my car without the moon roof. My head almost hits. :(

OK, I don't want to make this a personal war or something... but the fact is, you said it's kinda stupid not to buy the GT package. I didn't buy the GT, so consequently I'm stupid too. How should I take that if not as an insult?

Second, i did not say that you bought the GT package for $4000 - using the list prices was just a way to put numbers behind my way of seeing things. I didn't pay $1200 for my sport package either.

Third, I did not leave out the TPMS - my car has that one too. In fact, all RX-8s in the US have it, so that's not a GT extra.

I can also (manually) adjust the height of my seat, so that is not an extra feature of the GT either.

Regarding the trade-in: "trading in a car" means that you are doing a trade-in at the dealer when buying a new one. At least that's the common understanding about that term if I'm not mistaken. You might meant that you'd sell the car privately, but that's not the way it was worded. And the fact still stays: if you're selling a car when it's just a year old, you're gonna get a serious hit on the money you'll receive. The first year is probably the one when a brand new car loses most of it's value (percentage-wise).

5Gen_Prelude 06-08-2004 11:56 PM

You guys may want to post your height and your leg length. I'm only 5'10" and I'm near the top too. I have short legs though :(

thew 06-09-2004 01:40 AM

ok your just being kinda of lame now.. this was not to be apissing contest i was making suggestions about a seat mod.

you seem to be very insecure about somthing over there becasue everytime i try to get you back down to the ground you fly off the handle .. so . Sorry you are so mad at the world. I am finished with this post .

thew 06-09-2004 01:42 AM

Tamas 06-09-2004 01:45 AM

Whatever, dude.

thew 06-09-2004 01:50 AM

Somewhere out in space...

GiN 06-09-2004 10:02 AM

I'm 5'7 and have no problems with the seats. :D

But man some of you 6'+ guys probably have longer torsos or longer legs than others with the same height.
