Anyone actually gone back to the FAQ? It's amusing...

I love that it still specs out the RX8 at 250hp, and also includes the following statement:

"In addition, Mazda also claims to have improved fuel efficiency about 30% at idle, and wardsautoworld.com posted at article estimating around-town mileage of about 23 MPG"

That sentence alone should have some people's heads exploding:)

Hehe.

It's seems as though you have never owned a rotary engine before. The new engine is actually more efficient then the last NA 13b rotary engine, but using way more fuel to attain the the horsepower. The 1st generation FI 13b used 1 fuel injector per rotor and made 135hp. The 2nd generation NA FI 13b used 2 injectors per rotor and made ~160hp. The new renesis uses 3 injectors per rotor and mades 238hp.
The old car used to get about 450km/tank (59 liter tank)
New car gets about the same on a 60liter tank.

Not sure how your post follows mine.

I was pointing out a claim of 23 mpg "around town" is a severe contrast to many people's claims of only getting 13-17 as well as the long-since incorrect claim of 250hp.

For all the bitching and whining that is going on in this forum I have only read of a few people really pushing some buttons to get the issues addressed.

I would think that someone would have contacted the Federal Trade Commission (http://www.ftc.gov/) and open a complaint. I have seen them handle things for much less expensive items where what the company stated as features/benefits was substantially more than what they actually delivered.

Sating that the new engine is more efficient and can get 23mpg city only to hear people getting 13-15 and not even meeting the EPA's estimates on the sticker is simply deceptive marketing practices.

Remember the deal with computer monitors a few years back? Some companies were selling 17" monitors but the viewable area was barely over 15". They now have to state the viewable area after enough people felt ripped off.

comparing my 1994 rx-7 (all the bolt ons, ported 350 rwhp) and the rx-8 I found that under the same RPM the rx-8 gets better gas mileage. The Rx-7 though has turbos so its easy to cruise the highway at 2500-3000. AT 3000 RPM you are at 80 MPH VS 60 in the rx-8. I get roughtly 1.5-2 MPG better in the rx-8 comparing 3000 RPM for both. It would be more interesting to compare 80 MPH for both, i'm betting due to the agressive gearing in the rx8 the Rx-7 probably would get better gas mileage since its at a lower rpm.

You guys do realize that I was simply pointing out that the FAQ was incorrect/old/incomplete...

Haze 02-09-2004 12:38 PM

The FAQ has been getting updated a little, but yes parts of it date to WELL before the car was realeased.

If you want to volunteer to update it, I am sure that the administrator would love to hear from you :) . Toadman made an effort to get updated articles earlier in the year, and he had some articles submitted, but more work probably needs to be done.

Can we just add an FAQ like this...

"Why hasn't the FAQ been updated?"

MEGAREDS 02-09-2004 04:05 PM

I was given a Mazda booklet in October at the dealership about the International Engine of the Year Award. The booklet suggested that the Renesis was going to get mileage in the low 30s. I was stunned to see people getting 15mpg, and later realized the booklet was why my expectations were so far out of wack with reality. The moral here: check your sources... and the FAQ should not be posted as it is. Might someone at least go through it and highlight the inaccurate information, perhaps with footnotes?

JaegerNH 02-09-2004 04:33 PM

Megareds - do you still have the booklet and can you scan it?

Regarding checking your sources, if it has Mazda's name on it and you got it from a Mazda dealership, then I would consider that an official source and tend to expect that with a +/- marketing weasel factor. Your mileage may vary, yada yada.
