Almost killed my car today
 

Ok i suck at manual and today i somehow killed it 3 times in a row at a super uphill intersection. the last time i think i reved it too high and droped the cluch...the engine light flashed for a second and it started to smell...my friends told me it is buring cluch...so i pulled it over for 5 minuts and continues to drive. It was a little rough at idleat first but now it is very smooth at idle. And it feels like everything is back to normal...but of course i dont know shit about cars really... Think i broke it?

you didn't break it. that smell is a burning clutch smell. one trick when taking off from a stop uphill is to have the hand brake up, blend the clutch/gas 'till you feel that the car wants to move forward already, release the hand brake, gas it.

Yea i was just watching a video of that. How exactly do i feell it? i mean if it starts to want to go but cant wont it just die instantly? Idk i been in bigger slopes before but i guess i just sucked it up today.

Is the handbreak part a transitional phrase or do people use it all the time?

It depends on the incline. Once you're really familiar with the clutch you wont need to use it. When asshats pull up entirely too close in their automatic SUVs or whatever though I will routinely use the parking brake to keep the car from moving backwards entirely.

You basically disengage the parking brake as you feather onto the clutch which keeps your gas pedal foot free from the brake(to apply gas as it catches).

i drive pretty often to san francisco and the hills in the city are insane. i've been driving a manual for 10 years and i still use the hand brake trick all the time as blending the clutch and gas is close to impossible and torture on the clutch in those hills.

the car won't die instantly when you use this trick as long as you keep pressure on the gas pedal.

over revving is nothing to worry about... when I first started learning I did the same. I've never done the hand brake trick... is the general idea (without the hand brake) to engage as fast as possible before it rolls back? that's what I've always tried to do and it seems to work fine... havnt stalled on a hill yet I think...

You can tell when the car wants to move forward. It moves slightly forward and the weight of the car isn't resting on the e-brake anymore. That's when you release the handbrake.

What's a hill? I live in Florida..

we have enough hills to be annoying but i never use the handbrake
i always do the same as 8 maniac and have never had a problem.

I know the clutch really well so I don't have to. No offense.

don't worry happens to everybody when they start learning manual..... i learned on my friends jeep wrangler, so i burned that clutch up haha... don't sweat it, handbrake is your friend..

practice makes perfect

Just take the car to an empty park and manipulate the clutch pedal, just the clutch pedal and see how you would stall the car. To learn not to stall, first you must learn to stall it...

Practice does make perfect, but you can use the parking brake until you are up to speed.

If I were you I'd post it on the forum in the cars for sale section.

Otherwise you gonna need a new engine.
