after start, wait until idle drops to 1.5K or below?

A friend told me so, when start the '8, in cold weather the idle will jump over 2k, keep the car idle until it drops to1.5K or below, then shift and drive the car.

This is also what I did all the time.

But still, I can't help to ask if this is really necessary? or what's the specific reason why we do this? If we don't do this, just drive the car around immediately after start, what's the negative effect?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I just start the engine and drive without waiting. But it doesn't get very cold around here...

Ugh. Search!

You can drive the car right after you start it if you're in a hurry, just keep the RPMs low (below 4K or so).

till it drops below 1.5k is good. I at least let it idle 1 min if I want to go in a hurry normally I wait till water temp needle starts to move .
with rx8's little torque, you have to work the rpm to get it going, and I just dont want to put stress on a stone cold engine.

If it is cold you should wait till the idle drops and it warms up a bit...you wouldn't believe how high the oil pressure is at Freezing with 5-30 oil........Let it warm up till the idle drops and the oil pressure is down to a more normal level

Especially when rotary engine is much more sensitive to temp compare to piston engine.

I just turn the ignition key and wait a few seconds, then i go...goodbye.

I know the s1's dont get the benefit of the moving redline on the tach as it warms up. For me it caps redline at 5k rpm until it starts to warm up then caps it at 7k and then no cap when its finally warm.

I usually idle at least a minute and then start driving but still keeping the rpm's below 3k and then below 4k when its half warm. Its just personal preference anyway, everyone has their own idea about whats alright to do when an engines cold.

It's a good idea to let EVERY car warm up some before just taking off...
