After market knobs on Axial Flow shifters

Yes, I searched the threads, and there must be over 30 pages on RP's shifter and shift knobs. :banghead:

I bought a MOMO F16 knob and tried it on my RP shifter. It is a tad loud.:uh: RP hisself said the reccomended knob is the stock knob. Not a shifter problem.

Fair enough, but has anyone tried a Monster knob on RP's shifter? Is it relatively quiet? Anyone want a MOMO F16 CF knob for cheap? Dealer won't take it back cause I installed it.:ar:

I have a voodoo knob on my AFE SS, it is loud as hell.

I love it!!!! :)

uh... Forgive my ignorance, but how does a shift knob change the sound?

The knob in question attaches to the shifter shaft via set screws. Hence a metal to metal connection causing the knob to become sort of a sounding board or sound amplifier..think slide steel guitar (George Thorogood or Dire Straits). I'm no music expert, so I may get hammered on this.:uhh:

Anyway. The RP SS is slightly louder, I guess due to better shifter feel & less shifter isolation. Anyway, the stock knob, suggested by RP hisself, appears to have softer nylon threads, is ?leather? covered and is a heckuvalot quieter than a MOMO F16. In a perverse way, I kinda like the transmission sound, too. But........:Eyecrazy:

I'd take a photo of the knob, but my right hand is in a cast, so I can barely pick my nose, let alone run a camera. I may have 2 hands tomorrow. For now:

Picture of item: I see that damned little red x

i didnt notice a change in sound. im using the mazdaspeed shifter.

Speyrod 10-02-2008 07:36 PM

What kind of knob did you put on th Mazdaspeed?

Gish 10-02-2008 07:43 PM

How much for your shifter?

kersh4w 10-02-2008 07:44 PM

sorry, let me rephrase. im using the mazdaspeed shift knob.

im using the axial flow short shifter.

Speyrod 10-02-2008 08:02 PM

Hokay, Mazdaspeed knob...makes sense 'cause the stock Mazda RX8 knob is unobtrusive.

looks like this. i find it very easy to use and very comfortable. it also never gets too hot or ridiculously cold.

RP shifter is definitly NOT for sale. Like my guns, it will have to be pried from my cold, dead fingers! Talk to RP if you want one. :icon_tup:

I'll let the knob go for $50.00. The education in acoustics was $104.00. It wasn't even on the shifter a day. I bought because I had a MOMO Raptor on my last C5. The knob was quiet, but the B&M Ripper ended up with over a pound of lead to keep it quiet. Just two totally different cars.:mdrmed:

before you do that.

remove the knob, then the plastic that holds the shift boot.. turn it over and pull the green felt out of the inside of the shift boot..

then reinstall with out the green felt..

let me know how that goes.. ;)

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it. If it works, will you tell me why it does??:Eyecrazy:

Out of all the shift knobs I've installed on the RX-8, the 99-04 OEM Miata shift knob is by far the best. It is shaped the same as the Mazdaspeed shift knob as pictured above, and it really does shift like a dream. The Voodoo type sphere knobs are nice to look at, but they lack the leverage of the tall and stubby Miata shift knob.

Something like the Momo F16 would also work better because of the leverage provided by it's height.

Still gimping about with 2 1/2 fingers on right hand. I may take a shot at that knob tomorrow.

A couple of push ups each week will solve that for ya. :)

To put this to bed, at least for me, my Monster Shift knob arrived. Screwed on, looks good, doesn't make any noise. Kind of plain, but I'm having fun feeling and playing with my Monster knob!:Eyecrazy:

With one hand available for work, I didn't want to tear that friggin' console apart, again. So, I did the quick and dirty install per Monster Knob's instructions. I'm happy.

05rex8 10-10-2008 05:54 PM

^what happened?
I have the monster knob too btw....I switch between that one and my brushed aluminum one

Speyrod 10-11-2008 01:23 PM

Scuba diving. Putting my fin on, and my finger got caught between the strap and my boot. I then yanked my hand free and dislocated finger.
