Advice re Compression Test Failure

Hi,

You will all have to excuse my ignorance as I have little clue about engines but as the title suggests my Rx8 failed a compression test done by the dealer and I need some 'third party' advice.

Some info;

Late 2006 model
231 ps
80,000 miles
Full dealer service history

Compression test indicated rotor 2 (from memory) was at 3.5 (whatever the rating value is) but needed to be between 7 and 9. They tell this means a new engine required. Indicative costs are 3k for fitted 2nd hand engine (50,000 miles on it), or 5k for new engine from Mazda. I believe these costs are less VAT.

To some degree the costs are irrelevant as I'm picking up my new car on Thursday but had, of course, expected to sell the Rx8 on. I figure the 2nd hand value isn't going to be more than 3 to 4k at best so replacing the engine seems silly.

I have spent a fortune on this car over the last couple of months and am unsure what the best thing to do is.

Has anyone any advice?

Thanks

Adam

where are you located?
I suspect Europe, as they offer the 231 ps model?

I would try to sell, "as is", for people looking for a project car.
Otherwise, you're SOL trying to replace the engine. However, I believe you can order one from the US that will cost you less to have it shipped.

Has it been decarboned yet? Some times this will bring up the compression if it's carbon locked.

Sorry, I don't understand SOL?

I'm in Ireland btw.

No, not that I'm aware of.

Any idea on cost to perform this and likelihood of resolving? I don't want to keep throwing big money at it!

Thanks

Adam

SOL = Shit Out of Luck :D:

Ok, you aren't covered under warranty. Old Rotor brought up a good point. Try to see if you get get your hands on some carbon remover (Mazda "Zoom-Zoom Cleaner" or Seafoam). Follow the DIY guide on how to do the procedure.

edit: Go to the Europe Forum and find a thread that was recently started on where to locate the carbon cleaner in your area

It works better if "Out of" is pronounced like "Outta", hence SOL :P
