Adding too much oil, extent of damage?

Hi guys, dumb thing i did

Checked the dipstick the other day 5 minutes after the car shut off, it was a little bit over the notch closest to empty line, which would signify at least half a quart short, so I added about half a quart or so, Checked again, looked good.

Drove around, and then at the next fillup got a CEL, and checked the oil, but this time it was over the F mark about 1"....

The only thing I could think of was that the car mustve been on a slant (even though I swore it was even)

Anyway,I read up online about how bad it is if it is over F, that it can get into parts of the engine where it is not supposed to, etc. Was wondering if anyone knows the extent of damage that might be caused if i drove around for about 50 miles?

Thanks guys, and yes, in trying to be careful, I did something very dumb =/

With my experience if you checked it right after you shut the car off it would be over the F mark if you wait 5 min. It will give you a better reading. This happened to me once and I freaked out. Also, there are three dots b/w the empty and full line. each dot represents .5q needed. If you were at the last dot right before the empty line that means you needed 1.5q of oil. That's how it is on my 2005 rx-8 not sure if its different on any other years.

Drain some out....it gets high on the dipstick really fast after full though.

Not a real bad problem........won't cause damage. Might push some of the oil into your intake if you rev it really high.

I wouldn't worry about it. I read here that many dealers overfill oil for schedule checkups.

My 2 cents:
I wouldn't rev high until the oil burns off to a nominal level. Like what dannobre said, I don't want to chance oil in the intake system.

When I first got my car, I was all tripping about the oil consumption so I over filled once. The next day, I was worrying about the oil level so I just drained it all and changed it...

There really should be, either, a oil level gauge or a oil sight glass (like motorcycles have)

Dealer changed my oil yesterday. I popped the hood this morning and I had oil covering the intake manifold, and it was also COMING OUT OF MY AIR FILTER!! I've got the K&N II so it was really easy to see. There was a puddle of oil at the bottom of the filter element, and a bunch of oil that had already spilled out of the fiter. I poured about 3-4 ounces of oil out of the filter after I removed it!

Fuck the dealers!!!

Anyone know of a good cleaner for my MAF and intake/throttle body?

Use Electric Motor cleaner, u can get these cheap at most hobby shops. I've recommended it to alot of people on this forum. few bucks a can, great results.

besides cleaning the MAF and intake/throttle body is there anything else that i should worry about. I just checked my intake and boy is it filled with oil. I am taking it to the dealer on tuesday after christmas.

Is there anything i should tell them to check out since i am there?
