Accuracy of Mileage counter on RX-8
hey whats going on fellas. I was driving down to Atlantic City last weekend and I noticed something. I decided to reset my trip odometer to see if the odometer coinicides with the mileage markers on the garden state parkway. Well the car odometer started moving faster then then the highway markers. Is this usual with most cars or is this something of scam that manufacturers do so owners rack up for miles on their cars......Or are the mileage markers probably wrong....just curious...

only way to test this is to find a FLAT stretch of road that you KNOW it's 1 mile, reset your trip meter in your 8, and DRIVE that 1 mile start to finish
then you'll have your answer :o |

have you switched to different size wheels/tires than came one the car? depending on the amount they are different, that can have a small to rather drastic effect on the spedometer and odometer.
also, if it was just slightly off, that could be caused by inaccuracies in the placements of the markers and/or the tires getting slightly smaller as the rubber is worn off (although that is a very minimal change). |
no i havent switched wheels yet and i just got the car on may 14 so the tires couldnt have worn that quickly...

The speedo tends to run about 10% fast on mine, but the odo is pretty much dead on.

Mile markers are inaccurate. Those signs that say "Such n' such exit 1 mile" or "Any City 43 miles" are also inaccurate.

Mine is consistently off. I went on a road trip recently and checked it many times and it was off the same amount. Now if I could only remember how much it was. I want to say it was 2%.

remember that mile markers are measured at a constant direction, meaning if you tend to switch lanes or even drift left and right then your odometer will not be exact as the marker.

My speedometer is constantly off by 2 mph. I've checked it with my GPS many times. With cruse control on and a flat road, my car says I'm going 75 and my GPS says 73. OEM tires with approx. 8K miles on them. I have not checked the odomoter.

odometer spot on tested with waas enabled gps. speedo was off buy1.8 mph with stock tires, now with new tires same size different brand is now off by .8mph at 74.
