search, there is a way to fix that (fyi: it's a pain in the ass). it has to do w/ the connections behind that knob that need to be resoldered.

Do they simple things first like re-charge your AC
The AC always fluxuiates from hot to cold. That is the RX8 The engine runs 2.5x hotter than a piston engine. My experience on any working RX8 is at 90 degrees and above it's pretty much use less. Pleas enote when you reach over and turn the knob the normal thing to do is to let off the gas pedal. When you do this it will blow hot air. So you may not have any problem at all. The AC sucks when it is hot , just doesn't work. |
^that's true. if it's the problem i linked to, it's a big pain to fix, so definitely make sure it is a consistent issue that isn't a fluke tied to engine heat, etc., or something that only happens once or twice. give it some time. i had that issue and it went from random hot air to only working if i went all the way hot and then all the way cold immediately, to completely failing to blow cool air...that transition took a few weeks or months it seemed.

Hey wait a minute… I must have the bizarro RX-8! |
What do you expect from a Met fan....
Go Dodger Blue! It depends, if you are on the highway and no tranffic on a long ride is works ok. |
Bet 10 to 1 that the solder is busted on that knob. The EXACT same symptom happened to my 8 a couple of years ago or so. I had bought the control unit just a month before that DIY thread was posted.
When you twist the knob hard to cold, the actual pins that are supposed to be soldered twist a little and contact the PCB where they should and the AC works fine. As soon as you let go, the pins return to the center of their holes, and since the solder is broken, the pins just float in space and it just blasts heat. It is totally worth a shot at fixing it, even if you aren't good with electronics. You can easily pay someone to do it for you. The HVAC control unit is around 240 dollars, whereas a DIY fix, even if you had to buy a soldering iron/solder, would be about 20 bucks. |
