From 98 m3 to 04 rx8

I havent actually purchased the vehicle yet, but definately will with in the next 2 weeks (havent made up my mind between 3 colors). i have several questions. i plan on purchasing the greddy turbo kit and sp2 exhaust. ive been doing alot of research on this forum and on others as to the complications of the greddy kit. first question is; is there anyone in the new york/long island area that wouldnt mind helping me install the kit (as far as the software is concerned, im new to the rotory engine so i dont know jack about it; i would need more help with the flashing and sorts of the ecu). second question; On some webpages they offer the kit with and without an intercooler.... but on one site the kit is about 3100 w/o intercooler as opposed to 2900 w/intercooler. are there any vendors i should be wary of? are there any major differences that maybe the vendor isnt saying? im pretty sure i have more questions, but im in the middle of class so i gots to go. thanks for any posts in advance.

The dealer will take care of all the flashes to the ECU, you can put new maps and tune the Emanage (piggy back ecu that comes with the greddy kit) yourself, or have a good shop do it. Look into the Xinterceptor ECU, much better than the peice that comes with the greddy kit, better performance! Buy it from a vendor on this site, in the vendors section. YOU NEED AN INTERCOOLER! High Compression and Rotary.....!!!

Some of the kits might be older versions with the regular emanage, get the gold or ultimate if you plan to stick with the piggy back that comes with the ECU

Wrong forum. Try "Tech and Performance"... specifically "Major Horsepower Upgrades" forum.

I'll be making the same move myself, hopefully next Summer. Currently driving a 98 M3 Convertible, and hoping to get an 8 ... just wish there was an 8 convertible.

I'd hang on before buying a FI kit. I drove the Pettit Supercharged 8 a couple weeks ago, and a Greddy turbo 8 not more than 10 minutes later. The Pettit car blew me away, it felt sooo smooth, power all over and lots more of it than the Greddy car.

Woah. Now that's interesting. I wonder how it'll perform with the Hymee twin screw or RP's Axial Flow... hmm. Seems like Pettit's comments that a s/c is better for the Renesis than a turbo may prove to be true...

You may also want to look into the modified Greddy turbo from Mazsport (sp?). It's supposed to give not only more hp, but be able to hold boost to redline, whereas the stock kit cannot.

I made the move from an 04 M3 to an 05 RX8 several months ago. Was the best thing I ever did. This car is so much more fun to drive compared to the M3. In the M3 I always felt like I was driving a truck. You sit high in the car and there is a massive amount of window. Of course the engine did sound good going thru the revs but it just does not compare to the low center of gravity and even wt distrubution the 8 affords. Enjoy.

my m3 was fun to drive, had about 390 rwhp with active autowerke turbo kit. but i was just having too much trouble keeping up with maintenance and gas prices with it. it seemed that everything that could go wrong went wrong, and to top things off some retard rear-ended it WHILE IT WAS PARKED last week. so i sold it. EVERYTHING was so expensive for the damn thing turbo kit = 8500, engine rebuild = 2500, custom everything else 5000. with the rx8 i dont plant to modify the engine other than the greddy turbo and leave it so i have around 300 at the wheels. i love driving like i have a "free spirit" (and a lead foot). the rx8 is one of the only vehicles i know of like the m3 which has close to 50/50 weight distrubution, which hopefully means they have the same general feel to it when driving.

If your looking for 300whp, you might as well buy some Transmission parts. Other than that, good luck on reaching 300whp.

Well dont get the 8 if you're looking for better gas mileage, my guess is a FI m3 is going to get better gas mileage then a stock rx8, let alone a boosted 8.

Welcome, i'm also a bmw > rx8, i had a 540, it had more then twice the torque of the rx8, but i dont miss it... that much :D

I went from a '98 M3 to the RX-8 too. But I almost bought an '03 e46 M3.

Being an M3 owner, I was certain that the E46 M3was going to go in my garage next, but I thought I'd wait until I test drove the RX-8 as they were coming in mid '03. Glad I waited, one drive and I was hooked for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. I thought the e46 M3 felt heavy and unsettled compared to the e36 M3. However, when I drove the RX-8 I immediately felt right a home. Then drove the e46 M3 and RX-8 again back to back to be sure, bought the RX-8 and never looked back.

I couldn't agree with you more! I bought my E36 because it was the only Convertible with a usable back seat I could find that drives and feels like a Mazda ... I'm sure it's testimonial like this that puts a smile on Mazda Engineers faces

LOL, but just imagine the shocked look of dismay on the BMW engineers' faces - "Vhat?! Our M3 drives like der Mazda?!"

But I think there's a good reason why I've owned more bimmers and rotary cars than any other make.
