Of course it is, you just bumped it  |
I've subscribed to this one. Please Terch, give us the closure we so greatly desire...
This is the automotive equivalent of "I did not have sexual relations with that woman!" |

slow if your below 7k rpm ;)
|
It's a fast little car however the low torque is def holding it back
|
Fast is relative. Man I remember this thread.
|
Fast enough for me.
Torque is overrated, unless you want to pull trailers or tree stumps. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...956dea0e7.jpeg |
So did terch1 ever come back? did he ever have the guts to post again? Did he sell the 8 and move onto the next unsuspecting forum? Inquiring minds want to know!
I know 9k felt extremely betrayed... they were practically brothers!!! :suspect: |
If you have to ask if the 8 is really all that slow, you're looking at the wrong car. A vintage VW van is slow. An original Fiat 500 is slow. The 8, which can do 0-60 in 5.9 seconds - is not slow. If you think that's slow, you just don't "get" the RX-8, nor should you get one. The 8's best qualities are not only unique, but also cannot be expressed in numbers. It's simply not a "numbers" car. If that makes no sense to you, buy a Mustang. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple products don't make sense to you either. You're probably an accountant, or worse, an engineer. Your brain simply isn't constructed in a way that lets you understand the appeal of the 8.
No worries; there are many ordinary cars that will appeal to you, and have the "numbers" to prove it. ;) |
I would have to go with not slow.

I know 9k felt extremely betrayed... they were practically brothers!!! :suspect: I get the RX-8 and love them more than anyone really should. That said, not being much faster than a minivan in some scenarios can be disappointing. I got the chance to beat on a friends basically Stock (SARX coilovers and RB catback) R3 during a cruise last weekend and while I loved it, being used to a turbo RX-8 has ruined me from ever owning a NA 2 rotor ever again. And let me just add that I have been test driving BMW's all week, specifically the 135i M Sport and the 335i M Sport and my butt dyno says that both are faster than my turbo RX-8 and both handled superbly :( |
BUT, and it's a big but, (:)) will you be able to maintain it and work on it yourself as efficiently and cheaply as your 8?

Torque is overrated, unless you want to pull trailers or tree stumps. In my many years of driving, I've rowed (manual) way too many cars that were not only low on torque, the amount available only occurred at lofty RPM's. And that includes the 2004 RX-8 I bought new and kept for almost 10 years. Without a doubt, my RX-8 was the best of all the small displacement cars I ever owned. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't confess that I've always yearned for a bit more. So, I traded in my beloved RX-8 last year for something that has low end grunt and high end HP, not to mention hugely better MPG. I imagine you'd have to drive it appreciate it, but having full rated torque kick in at only 1400 RPM is sweet. |
That's cool. I don't miss what I don't have.
There are times when a little extra would be nice, but the absence of a lot of torque doesn't automatically make it 'slow', which is what most people point at when they argue it is slow. |

My "problem" is not with the 8; it's just that I got tired of "rowing" gears to get the performance. Now, I just nudge the gas pedal and get instant push. :D |
Guess I'm old fashioned.
I like shifting through the gears.:) |
^ I do too BC.
|
Not slow if you can manage to keep it above 5 grand with a manual gearbox. Automatics are slow.
|
If you think the 8 is slow... you need to drive all the new cars.
They're all 4 cylinder gut less wonders. Lucky if you can still find a 6 cylinder anymore. |
missing the obvious fact
I think a lot of people that bash them don't realize you're talking about a 1.3 litre engine that's producing around 200 hp. Now keep in mind I've built everything from pro drag to r/t and raced all of them. In a drag race I want my mk3 supra 3.8 pushing 52 pounds of boost on an alcohol engine. But I wouldn't dare try and run it on a road course. You really have to be someone who appreciates elegance and fine tuned handling abilities that are only truly comparable with high end expensive sports or exotics. Yes the 8 is finicky and requires a lot more maintenence but it's definitely one of my favorites for the money.
|
My 8 keeps up pretty well with the new mustang. Mines not stock either though. 2.0 tri rotor turbo haha. Can barely go's I mean camaros never know what hit em.
