5 Speed Manual Trans swap to 6 speed Manual Trans
Hi everybody,
Just resubmitting this thread (after clearing the off topic posts) because the technical details are very useful as you can see in the second post I made I am looking for swapping my 5 speed manual transmission (low power 192hp European Specs) to a 6 speed manual transmission. I know that in the states there are only auto and 6 speed manual transmission and you do know not a lot for 5 speed. Let’s take a look http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/213/velocity4444.jpg As you can see in the excel above (challenge is 5 Speed Manual, Cosmo is 6 speed Manual, Revolution is again 5 speed Manual with 235/40-18) the 6 speed Manual has a closer gear ratio than 5 speed manual (it was expected). So the question is: Consider the swapping the Cosmo 6 speed manual transmission to Challenge 5 speed manual. Will Challenge gain in acceleration in a drag race with the 6 speed manual trans? Please take under consideration that Challenge rev limiter is at 7500rpm. I guess that a close gear ration like 6MT will enhance the acceleration. On the other hand, rev limiter is 7500rpm and you have to shift more often than in 5 Speed Manual Trans What do you think? Thanks |
Before you answer we have already did some tests and found the answer:
we performed more than 7-8 drag races between low power 192 5MT and low power 192 6 MT, swapping drivers and GUESS WHAT WAS THE RESULT???????????????????? LOW POWER 192 6 MT was always A LOT FASTER IN STRAIGHT LINE THAN LOW POWER 192 5 MT. We started from 1st gear till 200Km/h, We started from 2nd gear till 200Km/h, We started from 3rd gear till 200Km/h ALWAYS the 6MT HAD SERIOUS ADVANTAGE 5 MT LOW POWER is imported in Europe. I am talking about installing a 6MT to the 5MT LOW POWER Europe. if you install a 6 MT into 5MT LOW POWER you will gain a lot in the straight line!!!!! THIS IS A FACT. Now let’s see about the cost. A used 6MT can be purchased in Greece for the cost of 760 US Dollars. The labor involved is 131 US dollars. Total cost is 891 US Dollars. The performance gained for 891 Dollars is value for money. It is unbelievable how much quicker a low power with 6MT installed is from a low power with 5MT. |
Advantages
1- Better acceleration in straight line 2- Better suited for specific tracks 3- The closed gear ration gives you slight better MPG 4- Car feels pulling faster Now the drawbacks. 1- Purchasing a used 6MT you may find out that some gears or sychros have been damaged. There is a serious cost for repairing this tranny. 2- With the money required for this swap you may install a nitrous kit 3- Used 6MT may not be available 4- If you later engage in FI a 5 speed Transmission would be preferable 5- Cruising speed when using the overdrive gears does not appear to be satisfactory compared to 5 speed manual tranny. |
we get it, so if you want to do it, go ahead. all the talk comparing the two trannies didnt tell us anything we didnt know. what is the point of the thread?

Yes you right you already new this information. However there are lot of people that they do not that information and instead of opening new threads asking the same thing is better if the information is gathered nicely here. You may tell me "who are those people that they do not know that?" ,,,a lot of European guys that have a 5 speed manual trans.

How about selling your car and buying a used 6 MT.
|
I have thought about it but the cost is higher and my car is very good maintained. It is better to go FI and get at about 300whp in my present car instead of buying hi-power rx8
|
just admit it you brought the wrong car.
actually I thought only the 192ps had 5spd, all 6spd's are 232hp. |

I know/understand. I'm just have the mindset that if someone isnt capable of figuring the simple math for gearing(the ratios needed are already all over the web), then they have no business doing something like this:dunno:
