Got rear ended today while in stop and go traffic on the freeway. I was pushed into a Chevy Suburban which had stopped. Interestingly, I sustained almost no damage to the rear end but, as you can see, substantial damage to the front. My 8 is at a very good body shop but they are not Mazda specialists. Anything special I should look for during the repair process?

Shocka 01-29-2005 06:54 PM

dam dude.. sorry about it.. hope u ok.

Here's another shot (boo hoo!)........

irish8 01-29-2005 07:09 PM

Is the car driveable? I feel for you!! Ouch. :( I would also recommend you have them look at the rear also. Sometimes major damage is invisable.

Good luck!!

PaulieWalnuts 01-29-2005 07:11 PM

Ouch. Hope you're okay.

irish8 01-29-2005 07:13 PM

legokcen 01-29-2005 07:18 PM

Hope things get better soon. Glad you are alright. Broke my heart to see that.

dazygirl415 01-29-2005 07:24 PM

Oh my goodness! I seriously almost cried for you. I hope she gets fixed soon!!!

Riggs 01-29-2005 07:48 PM

Sorry to see that. At least you sound unhurt. Car can be fixed.
I see a lot of body damage but is there any frame damage?

expo1 01-29-2005 08:43 PM

Now is a good time for a MazdaSpeed bumper.

SilverEIGHT 01-29-2005 09:00 PM

I'm really sorry this happened. I really do feel for you. As far as anything you should look for: Be patient and search this forum anytime you need help about the shop or insurance. This forum is full of help. Good luck and hope you get her back soon.

The damage looks cosmetic to me. I don't think there is any frame damage.

MI_FamilyMan 01-29-2005 09:04 PM

That darn Suburban sure did a number on your front end. Probably had a big trailer hitch on it or something, eh? Surprised you got nothing in the rear. Hope everything goes well with the repair.

EZZY 01-29-2005 10:43 PM

ouch, another one.
hope you got it sorted.
so do you have to pay for the damage you caused to the SUV infront of you?
i know the person rear ended you will have to pay for your damage.
the new rule here in sydney australia is that you will have to pay for the person you hit infront....... :(
according to the old rule, the last car will have to cope everything :)

Overport 01-29-2005 11:58 PM

well at least your ok, that accident hurt your nose pretty bad. i hate to see it like that.

Aratinga 01-30-2005 12:43 AM

Wow... two new members in the Rear-ender club in one day! Sorry to hear about your accident. I'm guessing you didn't have your foot on the brake when you were hit? That would explain being pushed forward without much rear damage. I did the opposite -- smashed down the brake to avoid being shoved into the car in front of me, so all my car's damage was to the rear.

The only advice I can offer is... be patient with the repairs. It can take a lot longer than you think it should. I was told to expect 1 week for every $1000 worth of repairs, and mine took even longer than that.

Mr. Ed's rx-8 01-30-2005 03:22 AM

sorry to hear that. i'm still waiting on mine to be done at the bodyshop. its been 2 weeks and i miss my baby.

hope you are ok!

RX Renesis 01-30-2005 03:47 AM

ouch.... must be a pretty quick go and stop to do that!!! pooor 8.... and ur alright right?

takahashi 01-30-2005 05:51 AM

Sorry to hear that.

Make sure the intake (the straight one but more importantly the bent one going to the passenger side) is ok when repaired. And hopefully they change the whole part and not trying to bent it back to shape - :D A funny intake noise will result then :p

Also make sure the inlet valve in front of the air box is working after repair - they open at 3750rpm. Check it with Mazda after repair.

takahashi 01-30-2005 05:55 AM

That is what I am talking about

See the naked RX-8 below

Note very carefully there are 2 tubes in front of the air box. One going straight to the front. One going to the left. Make sure they are repaired well. At the base of the straight tube will have the value which to be switch open at 3750rpm

Your white bit is already shifted down - so I think your intake may be damaged.

BTW are you an MD (medical)? I am an Anatomical Pathology Registrar

Make sure the shop does not put anything in the rear seats of the car without covering them first. Preferably not at all!

Grabitquick 01-30-2005 02:13 PM

Geez, drpaul, if that happened to me, I'd be really p****d. (You're a urologist, so you already know what fits in there.)

Seriously, as someone else (Irish, I think) suggested, make sure they check under the rear bumper, also, since damage can occur that is not visable. As for the body shop, I'm not sure that any particular shop is an expert in one make of car over another, but if they're good and reputable, then hopefully things will turn out well. Have you used this shop before with other cars?

capitolgator 01-30-2005 04:20 PM

if the person in front of him only felt one impact, then the SUV that rearended DrPaul's 8 will have to pay for both rear and front end damages; however, if he says he felt two impacts, that would indicate that DrPaul rearended the car in front of him first, then was struck by the SUV behind him and pushed into the rear of the car in front of him a second time. Then, the SUV will have to pay for rear damages to the 8 only and DRPaul's insurance will have to pay for his own front end damage and the rear damages to car he was pushed into. This can get quite tricky if the car in front of DrPaul says he felt 2 impacts- pray that does not happen!

magixpuma 01-30-2005 04:23 PM

Sorry to tell you, but i had the same type of damage to my front end and they havn't fixed it properly teh hood lines dont match with the side fenders srry.

DreRX8 01-31-2005 12:34 AM
