40th Anniversary RX8-ultra low miles
 

Hello everyone. I own one of these gems that is in showroom condition and only has 5,400 miles. I'm considering selling for the right price. I don't think KBB or Edmunds valuation services are properly taking into account the rarity of the car and its condition/low mileage.

I'd appreciate any feedback on what a fair valuation would be of my car. It's located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

These cars have AWFUL resale. Reality - KBB and/or Edmunds are both probably overly optimistic on value. Truth.

i have a 40th and when i bought mine it had 22k on it and the dealership wanted $23,000 but since i work for the dealership i paid $15k for it.

kbb and nada dont factor in numbers asn there are only 1000 40ths in the states.

All you really have is a badge, better suspension, a foam filled cross member, and what looks like series 2 wheels. The problem is if somebody wants an rx8 they are going to be looking for the best deal and probably not really care about a special edition that doesn't offer much beyond looks. If you want several thousand more than a regular 8 then they could just drop that money into another cheaper 8 and come out with a better suspension and maybe the wheels they want.

I'm not even sure if you stopped driving it today and mostly kept it in storage if the value would keep or not. Chances are pretty good in 10-15 years the car is not going to be really sought after just because its a 40th aniv edition.

any thoughts on the r3 being the chosen one in 15yrs??

The 40th Anny is worth nothing unless there is someone out there who is looking for one specifically and is willing to pay a small premium to have it.

What is worth something is the fact that the car is near perfect with very low miles, and since you are the original owner, probably well documented. These traits are becoming slim with these cars as many are becoming ragged, have changed hands more than a couple times, limited documentation, stupid mods, etc., etc.

I was looking one year ago and was going to buy a car like yours (perfect and documented) or I wasn't buying one at all. I was patient and found 'the one'. I probably paid a little more than average market value, but this car wasn't average. I am in New England where cars seem to command a little extra, which sucks. No clue how the OK market compares, however I would speculate the market is soft by 1-2% by comparison.

Based on that, I would ask $16,750 for your car and see what kind of action you get. Heck of a nice car for <$17,000, kinda sad really. Once you get north of $17K buyers are going to start shopping newer SIIs and R3s, and even in the $16Ks you will risk facing tha same scenario.

The R3 has pretty much the same things as the 40th right? Wheels, foam filled stuff(I think), bilstein suspension. It does at least have some cosmetic upgrades and of course the engine upgrades. I'm sure I am missing something but I'm not going to check.

I dunno though, these cars just drop in value. Since the rx8 was not very well received by people I doubt it will be anything like the cars before it. I was talking with someone about a week ago about todays cars becoming classics and it wont be an easy thing to do. Think about all the technology involved in making cars today run. In 20 years or more major things will need to be fixed and replaced and it will be a real bitch to find those parts. Could be a good sign for people with money who want an older car but for the average joe it wont be very good.

Sold my 40th Anniversary RX8!
 

I sold my 40th anniversary RX8 to an in-state buyer for $20,000! The ultra low miles were a factor plus the immaculate condition of the car. He bought the car based on photos posted on a free 'carsforsale.com' website I found a while back.

Thanks to those who replied to my post. I choose to believe that the 40th anniversary models have a special appeal and should retain their value if well cared for.

I'd have paid that for a 40AE if that's what I wanted - and if it were as mint as described. 5,400 miles is nothing. Where else could I get a virtually new 40AE for that little? Could take me years to find another like it - if I found one at all.

i paid 18.5k at the dealer for my 40th with 31k on the odo

to correct some things said above, the wheels are S1 wheels, they are just 40th anniversary wheels. They look the same as S2 wheels but have a different color... both silver, except the 40th has a metallic finish to it, unlike the S2 wheels that have a plainish silver to them.

also they have red seats, which is nice.. along with a sat radio and an exclusive paint.


so in summation, they should in theory have a higher resale than plain joe rx8s, though like what was said above, theres an ass for every seat. You have to find the right buyer. Everyone has their own reason to owning a rx8. I wanted the rx8 performance and the exclusivity of the 40th since i will be buried in a grave with this car.. I dont intend to sell it ever.

The buyer obviously does not read this forum. Otherwise he would have known that RX-8s flood and blow up on sight and are not worth anything at all.

No - just overwhelmed by all of the negative buzz about the RX-8's value.

It began when they were new, with people boasting about how much below sticker or invoice they paid. Then it continued with FAQs and advice to prosepective owners that read like the inserts that come with prescription drugs. Most of the posts from people wanting to buy one draw replies that would make one think that maintaining one is a lifestyle choice that needs to be backed up with a fat bank account.

I really enjoy my 8, which is approaching it's 7th birthday. I'm very happy to see that Kendall enjoyed and treasured his 8, and that he found a buyer who also appreciates the value of these cars.

Can't disagree with you on that point. Everywhere you look it's "just always keep $3000 stashed away for a new motor."

I love my car, and though it requires a little extra/different care than piston engine vehicles, the statement I would like to see everywhere is "take care of it, and it will take care of you."

Just gotta shrug off the negatives and enjoy driving this amazing car.

Like some have said, there are people who will want the unique-ness.
When I bought mine a couple of years ago, I was determined to get an '05 Shinka or an '08 Anniversary. Sure, I could've bought a non-limited edition for cheaper (and much sooner than it took me to find one), but I wanted one that was less common.
