4 Port crank

Hello, I was wondering if the crankshaft in the 4 port engine is already drilled to accept a throwout bearing?

Pico 07-17-2010 03:16 PM

crankshaft??????????????????????????????
What are those

Well I was refering to it as a crank due to my minimal rotary knowlege (im fixing to rebuild a rotary engine... figure it will be a learning experiance...) but point being... The shaft that the wankles go on that the flywheel bolts to. Is the rear of that shaft taped to accept the throwout bearing that would be required to put a manuel tranny in it?

It's the eccentric shaft, and you're talking about the pilot bearing.

Sorry, I don't know the answer. If nobody pipes up, you might find an answer in the shop manual...or maybe by digging through parts numbers.

Sounds like you want to do an AT to MT swap.
If that is the case, read through this thread:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-specific-performance-mods-97/mt-swap-151684/

FYI... the eccentric shaft part numbers are different between the AT and MT.

MrWankler 07-19-2010 10:30 AM

Yes I am doing the AT to MT swap. I have everything changed out with the exception of the engine and tranny... My 6 port engine has low compression so I have had the thought of running the 4 port engine with the 6 speed if they are compatible, just temporarily while I rebuild the 6 port. I have a 04 slk mercedes so im not hard up for a car... just have the bug to drive it haha

Jon316G 07-19-2010 10:50 AM

With so many differences between the two, that you would need to transfer over, then swap back when you get the engine back, I would say its not worth it.
Just wait patiently for your 6-port to return... don't want to risk fucking something else up trying to do this swap.

Thats probably what im gonna do... I am gonna order the rebuild kit from atkins rotary in the next couple days. I am going to rebuild it myself, first rotary... but I guess you gotta start somewhere...

Just do your homework. I have rebuilt plenty of motors but I'm not sure it's worth it on the Renny. What if your housings are no good?

It is but you will also need to be concerned about internal balancing of the e-shaft.

MrWankler 07-19-2010 10:47 PM

Alright so after some brain storming I have came up with a conclusion as to what I am going to do. I did a little research and I believe that the rotor housings and wankle between the 4 port and 6 port are the same... My 4 port engine has 1500 miles on it (was replaced under warranty) and my 6 port has like 92k miles. So what im thinking is this... I will order the rebuild kit from atkins rotary, I will then tear down both engines, use the rotor housings and wankles from my 4 port engine, and piece back my 6 port engine. I will also put new bearings and such in it... I realized there is no point in short cutting the car b/c its gonna be my "race" car... Im sure its not gonna be as fast as I would like, but I have came to a harsh reality that a mercedes is to expencive to fix when you tear it up. I will be doing the engine rebuild myself with an attempt to gain some knowlege as to how it works and to be honest im pretty freakin curious to see what it looks like inside haha. Does anyone know of a thread doing a step by step teardown/rebuild? I think its so funny that many people have tryed to discourage my project by telling me that I dont have the knowlege to do this swap... I completed the interior/wiring today, I need to drop the engine from the automatic, rebuild my engine and reinstall and the transformation will be complete!!! But yea if anyone has any ideals/conserns as to the ideal of swaping out rotor housings/wankles let me know. (BTW I realize I will have to keep the rotor and housing paired up and maintaine each ones orentation)

I think this project is awesome. It's great that you're going at it despite the negative responses. I say hell yeah! I just wish you lived closer so I could help.

I think we call that a "Factory Service Manual", although Kevin from Rotary Resurrection did post a thread involving some sort of rotary rebuild. Step-by-step? :lol2:

There are too many details to cover to do a comprehensive thread about rotary rebuilding. Cursory, maybe. Comprehensive, not likely.

Since you have 2 engines to give away, one apparently with very low mileage you may want to ask Mazmart what kind of deal they may give you on a rebuilt engine.
In this way you would not waste a good working engine to try to rebuild the 6port one.
You will also probably end up spending less than what a reliable rebuild costs and trust me it's not just the cost of the "rebuild kit" from atkins :)
Since you state to have little or no wankel knowledge at all i'd follow this safe route that will ensure you a long lasting engine.. something that your first rebuild won't be!
