3M plastic material for bumpers?
 

I know the 3M plastic rock guard material has been discussed, but I would love something to ptotect my bumpers here in NYC.

My 94 probe looks great- except for the bumpers.

ANy thoughts as to using the 3M material as a way to keep bumpers lookign good after they have been tapped by another car parking?

3M Clear Bra?
 

Is that what you are refering too?
I've seen it done on many cars.
However, it is there to protect your paint from rock chips more than bumper to bumper taps and rubs.
You need a professional to have it installed and the downside would be potential yellowing of the film over time.
You can always buy a can of touch up paint and learn how to apply it so it vitually unnoticable.

i spent the $97 with trussville for the bra. it fits snug and the ends snap into the wheel well instead of having a felt covered piece of metal that you bend to wrap around.

it's probably the nicest one i've seen from the factory. i just wonder if the clear material would be better used on the back of the side mirrors?

i don't remember anyone recommending anything for them.

There are other threads which, in my opinion anyway, have had somewhat better success in discussing this topic. Try the search function & revive one or more by posting somthing there if you wish (must).

3M film works well for the typical bumper "rubbing" from city parking, we do many rear bumper strips for cars here in San Fran.

Xpel has a full front kit for the RX-8 ($279 plus install of about $125). After talking with a local installer and others from the net, I think that the 3M or other material is exactly what I need to keep my bumpers looking decent here in New York.

I may do the rear bumper in a heavier grade film, as the installer suggested. I will probaly be working with Monster Coatings.

I've had the 3M stuff on my 3rd gen for five years now (completely covering the front). It doesn't yellow with age (it's vinyl). It does protect from rocks etc. but it will tear from a sharp rock. I have 3 or 4 spots that it has been torn through. I have also "rubbed" against my garage door (wind pushed the door into me) a few times hard enough to put paint from the door on it. After cleaning the paint off there was no damage to the 3M stuff. You do want a good installer for excessively curved surfaces.
