2016 Air Bag Recall - All Series RX-8s

DASHBOARD INFLATORS ARE NOW UNDER TAKATA WORLD-WIDE RECALL.

Normal Recall procedure is to notify original owners of cars by letter (mail), IF you are the owner of a car
which has changed ownership multiple times then the Mazda Distributor may never know,
the onus is now on you to contact your local Mazda Dealer (or MNAO) with your FULL VIN # and take it from there .......

UPDATED June,2015!
From Mazda USA Mazda USA Media - News

Mazda North America Operation contact info:
By Phone: 800-222-5500 Monday – Friday, 6:00am to 4:45pm PST

Mazda North American Operations

NOW A WORLD-WIDE RECALL FOR ALL 2003-2011 RX-8's

Update June 10, 2015.
""GOOD NEWS"" FOR RIGHT HAND DRIVE S1 RX-8's, MAZDA HAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE RIGHT HAND INFLATOR IS NOW
PART OF TAKATA RECALL (June 10, 2015), I expect this to include the UK/Asia and all LHD's in Europe. CANADA is also confirmed.
For ALL S2's (Right Hand and Left Hand Drive WORLD-WIDE) this RECALL ONLY applies to Passenger Side Air Bag ONLY, not Drivers as S2 Drivers use a different brand for a different Steering Wheel shape and design.

THIS NEW SAFETY RECALL CONFIRMED IN THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES...
North America (Americas)
Japan
Mexico
Canada
Australia
UK

I SUGGEST THOSE WHO HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY THEIR LOCAL MAZDA DISTRIBUTOR OR
LOCAL MAZDA DEALER CONCERNING THESE DEFECTIVE DASHBOARD AIR BAGS TO
INITIATE A CONVERSATION AND DEMAND ACTION TO RECALL AND RENEW YOUR Takata INFLATORS.

MAZDA KNOWS MORE THAN MOST THAT THIS RECALL IS A SAFETY ONE, THANKFULLY
NO DEATHS HAVE BEEN RECORDED SO FAR IN ANY MAZDA VEHICLE WORLD-WIDE.

FINAL RECALL 8215F FOR Series 1 RX-8 AIR BAG INFLATORS IS CURRENTLY ACTIVE, ALL EFFECTED CARS/OWNERS SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED RE-CALL LETTERS BY NOW.

THIS RECALL NOW INCLUDE ANY SERIES 2 (R3) 2009-2012 RX-8's WORLD-WIDE FOR PASSENGER DASHBOARD AIR BAG ONLY, IT DOES NOT INCLUDE OUTER DASHBOARD SURFACE IF 'H' PATTERN CRACK IS PRESENT.....BUT....

2004 RX-8 Recall

Advice has changed December 2014, Please read first post in this thread...

Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda are recalling about 3.3 million vehicles worldwide because the passenger-side air bag could deploy with too much force, sending shards of metal into the passenger area, the automakers said Thursday.

It will take some time for the replacement parts to get into the pipeline. Wait until you get the postcard in the mail. It could take a couple of months.

Advice has changed December 2014, Please read first post in this thread...

looks like the recall affects mostly vehicles from 2000-2004 so maybe some early rx-8's are effected. Not sure if there's an overlap with the previous airbag recall, but if anyone with dealer connections has more info it might be a help![/quote]NY Times says the 2004 RX-8 is part of the recall:

yup, looks like it will affect some early RX-8's

Report Receipt Date: APR 11, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V130000
Component(s): AIR BAGS

Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations

SUMMARY:
Mazda is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured January 14, 2003, through May 29, 2003; and 2004 RX-8 vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through June 30, 2003, to address a safety defect in the passenger side air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses the passenger air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side air bag.

CONSEQUENCE:
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.

REMEDY:
Owners of all vehicles on which a defective air bag may have been installed either as original equipment, or as a replacement, will be notified. Dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. The safety recall will begin in May 2013. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6. Mazda's recall campaign number is 6913D.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Hello all,
I have an 04. Any idea how this would be replaced?
I would hate to have my dash taken apart by Joe Sausagehead and end up with a bunch of squeaks & rattles.

I know it's a hazard, but one of the things I really like about my 8 is how quiet the cabin is. It would tick me off if it changed.
Is the possibility of air bag deployment injury worth putting up with everyday annoyance?

Just pondering.

I would suggest contacting your dealership (who most likely hasn't heard of this yet) and forwarding them the NYTimes article linked above.

Mazda says it will recall about 20,000 cars worldwide. In the U.S., the recall affects two RX-8s and 147 Mazda 6s.
Some different numbers than other places. Still a low count.

they won't know about it yet. the NHTSA letter says Mazda won't do anything until may.

B, i looked at the Mazda website, and there was no banner or anything that jumped out about this, i also ran the vin of my car, which actually falls in the date range (6/03 build) and i'm not one of the two....

i suggest that its been 10 years, what is another week?

Possibly Zoom44 is. He is one of the first to get a RX8 in the US. Mine is a fall 2003 build, no recall.

I'm with you. I don't like anyone touching my car, which is why I do everything myself. It bugs the **** out of me to go to emissions and watch my car get ham-fisted through the process by the techs who obviously could care less about peoples machines. Inside my car, about the only thing you hear (other than that intoxicating rotary symphony) are the tires. No squeaks, rattles, weird vibrations or anything. I don't want to even chance giving that up. What are the possibilities of mine being one of the suspects? Don't know, I guess we just wit and see. Dammit.

This coinsides with the 149 number I saw elsewhere... nice to see the RX8 broken out... even nicer that's its only two... My build date is NOV 2003 so I'm pretty sure I'm not one of the two.

Sounds like they are expanding this recall to include up to 160,000 RX-8's and Mazda6's.

http://www.autonews.com/article/2014...ta-airbag-flaw

I can't find anything at the NHTSA site at this point, nor at Mazda USA.
