2004 "8" selling price, low miles
 

Hi, all. The time has come to sell my beloved 2004 RX-8. I bought her new, and have really enjoyed this well-balanced sports car. I have become attached to her after eight years of bonding, and would love to keep her for years to come.

But, alas, my wife needs a new car. I only drive five miles round-trip to work and back, but my wife drives about 50 miles. The plan is for me to sell the RX-8 in order to come up with the cash to help pay for her new Honda Fit. I'll then have to drive her 2002 Focus (high mileage).

The question I have for y'all is this: what is a fair asking price for a 2004 RX-8, clean, with only 37600 miles on it? It is still a pretty car, of course, with but a few minor blemishes. Everything works and the car seems to need nothing done to it. I was thinking of asking for about $11500 for it. Dealers, of course, are offering much less. But I'd hate to let a car with such little wear go for much less than the $11500.

What do you folks think? Am I crazy, or should I hold out for a real good offer from someone?

And, just in case anybody is wondering, yes, I plan on getting a used RX-8 (with more miles on it, of course) to replace the Focus as soon as I can.

why not just keep the 8 and trade in the Focus?

The Focus is high mileage and won't allow me to get the payments on the Fit down to where we're comfortable paying them.

^^^yeah exactly what this guy is saying makes no sense at all! whats the point of selling you 8 then buying another 8 with more mileage just sell the piece of turd focus and keep your 8 duuuur

To answer the OP's actual question, $11,500 seems like a reasonable asking price. In fact, if you could provide more details (pics, location, etc.), either here or in the For Sale section, I for one would be interested in taking a look.

I feel like you can get more possibly. I'd start a little higher perhaps, so you have some bargaining room, maybe at 13500 or even 14k. The mileage is a big seller at that year.

Thanks, I'll probably put it on AutoTrader and Craigslist here in NC. I wouldn't expect anyone to buy or negotiate on a car sight unseen.

Selling the RX-8 could reduce our montly payment over 4 years to maybe $200 a month or less. Selling an old beater of a Focus will not do that. Replacing the RX-8 with an older one will probably be a while. The Focus is in pretty good mechanical condition but not much to look at.

I have considered something like that. But I don't want to scare off possible serious buyers. Newer cars with the same mileage are indeed going for a bunch of cash these days.

It all depends on where you're located. If everyone and their grandmother drives an 8 where you live, you won't get much.

That is a very low mileage for an 04. Anyway, you could sell it for more than other 04's out there. You could use the Blue Book value to know the estimate value of your car. Good luck on selling the rx8, i know you will regret selling it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

That seems low. I would def at least start higher and work your way down.

I think kbb is showing 12.5 for my area for a car like this in good condition.

Ok low miles, you might sukker someone to buy it.
Anyone that knows anything about the car won't.
Not to mention in 2 years that any 10 year old RX8 won't be worth 5k.
Of course this just my 2c.

Even if it's low miles, it's still an '04.
It's still in the 30ks but it's closer to 40,000. I've seen '07s go for around 13.5k-15k with the same mileage with another 3-4 years left of warranty.

Thanks for the thoughts! I'll consider them and any others that are made before making a decision on the asking price. I certainly won't be suckering anyone into paying for more than what the car is worth. But letting the car go too cheaply is not an option, either.

I live in Raleigh, and recently bought my '05 Shinka with 66k miles for 10 flat. I've seen a lot on craigslist here for more than that, and most of the ones I went to look at didn't want to deal. Personally, I don't look at kbb, only nada... and then, I would only be willing to give you what the trade-in was for it. Then again, I just sold my truck for way more than I thought I would get on craigslist, so it all depends on how quick you need to get rid of it.

Just know that once you list it, your price will only go down from that point.

I picked up my 2008 back in December with 32,200 miles on it and paid $14,000. Car is in awesome condition with some left on the bumper to bumper warranty even. just sayin...

Isn't this just one freaking cool car, makes going to work so much more enjoyable. Don't sell it.

Keep the car, trade in the wife. A paid off 8 is cheaper than a new car payment. My wife would never ask me to trade my car in so she could give me hers and she getting a new one. No offense but fuck that. Your wife can lease a brand new Kia shitbox for 159 a month.... Why do you have to suffer just because she works far away?
