1st time buyer needs help!

so i plan on buying a 2004 rx-8 for a little under 16k has about 25k miles..

i'm going to be commuting to school 2 times a week. (2 hr drive each way so about 235 miles a week)

ive heard this rotary engine is complex. are the repairs expensive?? expensive compared to a different engine.

think the car would break down on me after a few months? is it alot of wear im puttin into it?

help me outt pleasee! i'm stalling my deal with the car dealership so let me kno ASAP?

Read the stickies in the tech, garage forums etc.

But I would say that any engine repair is expensive, but the rotary has fewer parts to go bad compared to a piston engine.

Do your carfax history type research and check out the repair history and warranty maintenance......a well maintained RX8 may be perfectly fine, but a poorly maintained one, or one where the history cannot be verified, may be a gamble.

Don't forget.......with the 09's rolling out and the 08's being discounted, there are a lot of RX8's on the market, plenty to choose from.

Don't be impulsive and crave this particular RX8 on the lot when there are PLENTY of comparable RX8's on the market for similar mileage and price.

As far as complexity......yeah, not every piston-head mechanic can work on the rotary engine. Where you once may have been able to take your car to the friendly neighborhood mechanic, or, do the repairs yourself, with a rotary you may have to take it to a rotary specialist or a dealer.

AT or MT?

Rotory engine is simple, not complex. Only three major moving parts. You've been hearing stuff from ignorami. Read the FAQ on this site for straight info.

Worrying about cost if you blow the engine is moot, because there's a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty on the drivetrain and an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty on internal engine parts. 235 miles a week isn't a whole lot - kind of average use. Doing it in two 117.5 highway runs is a lot easier on a car than if you drove 33.57 suburban stop/go miles each day.

The rest of the RX-8 is no more or less complex than anything else on the road today. Get a copy of Consumer Reports annual auto issue for reliability info.

235 miles per week equates to 12,000 plus per year. That is nothing. That is average driving.

illjordanz 08-02-2008 01:21 PM

the 235 a week is just the commute to school.

ill prob add another 120 for the rest of the days. so a total of 355 a week (about).

i live in the middle of nowhere! so everything is a drive to get to.

about 85% is highway.

That still only comes out to 18.5k miles/year. That's nothing the car can't handle. I know a guy who has an 04 with well over 100,000 miles on it. You'll be fine, just take care of it.

No way you should pay $16,000 for a 2004 auto. No way. You can do better than that. The '04 autos did not hold their value.

yeah the rotary motor is not complex at all an one DO NOT GET THE AUTO 2. if you do buy an auto 16k for an auto 04 is def not worth it..
