151 mph on the Autobahn

Hey everyone,
I've been here in Germany for about a month now (Air Force) and I didn't think the stock RX8 could go that fast. I thought 149 was the max but, its definately 151. This was flat autobahn area and stopped accelerating at 9200rpms. Just thought I'd let everyone know how fast our RX is legally. Thanks

Tony

GPS verified? If not probably 3-5% out minimum.

But nice to know peeps are taking full advantage of german roads :)

grogiefrog 03-08-2004 07:51 AM

Do they have any special requirements to run a car on the Autobahn?

Nope. Just sections of Germanys highways are unlimited.

Even at 150mph you got to whatch your RVM because stuff can catch you fast...

In two weeks I'm driving to Holland from Switzerland. 500 km of pure German Autobahn, can't wait!

Reminds meh of a story.

German merchant banker., called in Mclaren to service his F1.

They phoned him at work, told him something was seriosly wrong with the cars electronics. Had registered extended periods over 220mph.

He said "Thats OK, when the roads are clear I take the F1 to work as its quicker than my helecopter".

:O

How did the car feel at 151?

Do you have the factory rear wing?

TIA!

Yes, if you drive slow take the side streets.

Best of luck, may your roads be dry and clear, and if you have a digital, snap us a pic and we can all picture ourselves on that beautiful stretch of earth.

Hell, I'd like to see a video of what it's like to go 150. I've seen the short one just showing the speedo getting to 143 before letting off but it didn't show out the windshield

Autobahn just means highway not a direct translation but the is pretty much what it is. There are speed limits but they are not posted very much at all.(from memory cal from belgium to ramstien ...speed limits were posted at the boarder) Best part about the AB is that they are very well maintained. I did 150 in a mustang (no damn GPS confirmation stuff) and I got to tell you. the road get really thin around that point. Police tend not to run radar or chase cars the just run a camera system and send you a bill for you ticket in the mail. (When I was there). Also (as i continue to ramble) ....damn it lost my train of thought when it come back i will repost or edit. oh yeah I was told when i was there from a very unreliable source that the camera could not actuall get your picture if you were above a certain speed. not confirmed. ok i am done.

I was driving from Vienna to Amsterdam a few years back in a VW Golf (I don't remember what trim level).
It topped out around 125 of so (where I kept it for hours at a time).
It was fun to see BMWs go flying by me at 150 or higher with mom in the passenger seat, two kids in the back or even grandma.
On more than one occasion, grandma was driving.

What is the matter with you people here in the US?

rjacobs 03-08-2004 02:30 PM

I dont think it is a matter with people, well some people, but its the road system here, it was never designed for high speeds like the autobahn is and the upkeep on them here would be crazy. We think it is bad now, what about if they had to replace whole sections of road instead of just re-paving. Go to Montana if you want to drive fast, they dont really have a speed limit, or has that changed.

Rob Im not quite sure what you meant by the GPS verified thing.

Hmm...well to me it felt pretty sturdy. You can feel the suspension start to tighten up a bit and I guess thats normal. I mean its fast and I havenīt had anyone pass me or attempt to pass me going that fast yet. Even going 100mph doesnīt feel like that big of a deal cause many people are going that fast as well. Iīd say about 115 to 125 is plenty fast and will pass most even on the autobahn.
My landlord has a BMW M3 and a porsche 911. He told me the top speed on the m3 is 280 km and the porsche is 290 km. The rx8 is just a bit over if not exactly at 240. Well our american spec rx8īs are anyway. So for a lot less money....weīre only 40-50 km off of some of the fastests cars on the autobahn. Iīm sure there are faster but, you donīt see them very often if at all where Iīve been.

I actually donīt have any exterior mods at all except the mazda chrome wheels. I was thinking about getting a MS kit. Do you think that would hurt the performance?

and they usually won't pass you on the right so if you're going "slow" in the left lane they will tail gate you until you get out of the way.
