10,000 rpm scare
Ok I found an open lot to do some donuts in and as i'm doing the start of it i have it in first gear and didnt realize i had gotten it up to 10,000 rpm by the second rotation. Was only in the 10k range for about 3-4 seconds before i just let off the gas and realized where the needle was. The car still feels the same but i'm stll nervous for long term damage. Only 1350 miles on the car, havent done an oil change yet, was gonna wait till 1500 to get the first oil change out the way. You think the car is gonna be ok?
|
mmm, doing donuts for sport. I would worry more about your tires.
|
Better get a new engine. You're not supposed to rev 8's beyond about 6k or so.
|
No. Mainly because your car only has 1500 miles on it and you're already doing donuts in the parking lot. The car can take redlining just fine but I suspect you'll find a way to break it.
|
Yes. It'll cut fuel before it blows up.
But change oil now. Mmmm ... Donuts |

sniff sniff, I smell a high schooler |
bah 20000 miles ago i by mistake shifted for a split second into 3rd from 6th (i was intending a shift to fifth) at 130 miles an hour and the car spiked to at least 12000rpm (i pulled out obviously) and nothing went wrong.

please destroy your car

last time i revved over 6k car blew up with more explosive force than an h-bomb.
|
your car will stop supplying fuel to the engine automatically when you reach 10K rpm so don't worry about that.
I believe Mazda recommends your first oil change around 5,000 miles? Look in the owners manual. |
I ignored the break-in period and have not had any problems yet (at 18,000 miles)
|
wait, i thought the RX-8 redlined at 12k????
|
yea the car feels fine. Was just wondering. its hard to not drive this car hard and do donuts and drifting it around corners or whatever. I don't care about tires, I'll just buy new ones.
|
^that's because you have the JDM 12,000 rpm edition. The US version is only good to 6,000 rpm at best. I wish I had the Candian version- I hear it revs to 23,632.534 rpm.
|
same shit happend to me going from 6th to 3rd by mistake at 115ish mph...i thought i shit my pants, and then i realized i Did.....lmao 10k rpm.it eats those for breakfast..
|
damn, time for a new ecu. damn those canadians and they're crazy low end torque drifting and high range redlines.
CDM FTW! |

So do I, but remember, you don't have to be in high school to be a dumbass.

I got my '8 up way past redline once, but I don't know the exact number because the information was lost at the event horizon of the black hole created by the rotors.
Steven Hawking is wrong. |
good job
|
I saw Stephen Hawking on the street in Cambridge once. I should have asked him about the RX-8 creating a temporal shift at 12K RPM.
|
Fuel cut at 9k rpm. Not at 10k. If your tac reads that it's just off a little. You can't over rev the motor unless you downshift to a lower gear by accident. Even still you don't have an valves to float or pistons to smack your valves into. Still shouldn't do it for other reasons but not nearly as deadly as it would be in a rod piston motor.

You can't go pass 9.5K the fuel cuts off,

how is the OP stupid. by accident I went past the 9,000 rpm redline and was worried , it was a question bro.

He can't redline it when it's cold. The ecu is smarter than the average owner and won't let you.
If he's got 1500 miles on the engine, redlining it is fine. That's plenty. Fuel cut is there for a reason. My new engine break in procedure involves hard driving with redline runs for the first 20 miles (yes I'm serious!) and then an oil and filter change. Then drive it normally for the next 500 miles and change the oil and filter. Then drive it normally again for the next 500 miles and then change the oil and filter again. After this point you can get back on it hard again. By 1500 miles you should be on your 4th oil change! You've got tons of crap in the oil from break in. The tach may read 10,000 rpm but the engine isn't doing that much. |
Let's lock it.

Im sure we'll hear from you in a few weeks when you blow your new engine that youve already abused. By street racing and bouncing off limiter WHILE STILL NEW. Youll most likely romp on it cold too. also, i see all. So this is why:

Funny I'm wasting my time on this thread today.....
This morning on the turnpike .. stuck in crusing traffic i wanted to downshift from 6th to 4th and giddy-yup past a few cars ... I was sure i was in 4th ... but once i released the clutch the car told me otherwise!! ... It was second! Bit harsh on the car i suppose ... but i was just pretty pissed at my stupidity. Screw the turnpike .. take the backroads. |
kids these days ..... parents spoiled them WAYYYYY too much.
Next thing i know is that he is gonna cry when his car breaks down, start saying this car sux and that. |
