07 RX8 Tested

Im new to the site, so hello eveyone.
I was just wondering if anybody saw the new car and driver with the rx8 against the 350 and new TT. They stated the quarter mile was 15 seconds, by far the slowest ive ever seen in any of the mags, also a 6.6 0-60 run. I know they lowered the power on the 07' but damn.

Rems31 05-29-2007 01:37 PM

I've done 30 seconds going 0-60

lesper4 05-29-2007 01:46 PM

if you own an rx-8 you should know that this are not straight line cars. there for almost any new car will be faster since they are all making more power. now take it to a track with turns and the 8 will be much higher in place closer to teh top.

r0tor 05-29-2007 01:50 PM

a) this is about a month old
b) the car only had 600 miles on so it wasn't broken in... C&D's long term tester ran a similar time when new and then mid 14's after 20 or 30 thousand miles

NoTears316 05-29-2007 02:11 PM

Mine has over 50k miles... I should be running low 14's by now.

DarkBrew 05-29-2007 02:53 PM

Welcome to the forum!

Buy a used one 'cus it's faster! By 200K miles a 13 second 1/4 mile is possible :)

Actual power output isn't any lower. Only the rating system has changed.

238 was given in 2004 when they "realized" they "mistated" the HP number. 232 comes from the new SAE numbers. Everything's the same except the way they rate it. Kind of like the new MPG numbers coming out for 2008.

NoTears316 05-29-2007 05:35 PM

It actually started at 248, then 238, then 232.

j67345 05-29-2007 09:05 PM

in a few years we might be down to 212!

mysql101 05-29-2007 09:07 PM

but in reality you get about 170-190 :)

Huskyfan23 05-29-2007 09:29 PM

170 - 190 at the wheels. 40 - 50 hp is normal loss during the transfer from the engine to wheels. No way in the world a Ford Mustang GT / 350z / G35 put down 300 hp to the ground.

Duke15 05-29-2007 09:35 PM

I smoked a Prius at a stop light today AND I used more fuel too!

I saw that Car & Driver. I believe they also stated that, compared to the 350 and the new TT (and the Mustang), the RX-8 finished 1st in their comparo test. They determined the 8 was the "best sports car" because it "pleases us the most". You're obviously all about acceleration but damn—"best sports car", dude! I think there's a shiny new Mustang out there with your name on it. You'll love it—it can go very, very fast.

Pick up an auto at 212 HP FTW. Heh NOT.

mkaresh 05-31-2007 09:18 AM

If you need more power, downshift.

The RX-8 is a blast on any curvy road. If you have no curvy roads where you live, then get something with lots of low end torque and a slushbox and put the pedal to the floor every time the light turns green.

As I wrote in a blog entry recently, we've become a nation of torque junkies.

Kick the habit, buy an RX-8:)

Your blog post seems to be pretty fair. I think the problem is that many people want fun out of their daily driver. If their daily drive is from stoplight to stoplight on straight, flat roads why wouldn't they get an automatic with lots of low end torque. Personally, I drive just like the guys in Meet The Parents when they're racing home. Sure I'm not the most skilled driver, but I always have lots of fun.

40-50hp loss is NORMAL? Dude - that's normal for a 1987 Mustang GT - NOT a car with today's materials AND a CF driveshaft.

I've seen two independent engine dyno's of the stock renesis. Both were about 215hp at the crank. Maz/SAE revised numbers of 232hp is even optimistic.

;)

You guys must of heard it...............Power Is Nothing Without Controll..................and this car has controll!

jimmyhauser 05-31-2007 10:06 PM

I am a torque junkie (drive a CTS-V). But I love my sister's RX-8. She just moved back to town so now I get to drive it more. I think it is one of the few remaining sports cars around that hold to the ideal of sports cars. The TT and Z are NOT sports cars. They are shortened sedans masquerading as sports cars. If I could live with such a small car, the 8 would be on my short list.

Actually, the original rumors and press release from Mazda was 280ps, then it was 250hp in the ads and brochure, then 247 upon release, then 238 after the lawyers told them that was a good number, then it was 232 after the SAE testing.

All the same engine? Same setup as well?

tajabaho1 06-01-2007 12:46 AM

torque can suck it, I'd rather drive an rx-8 than a mustang, and the TT is a massacre to the leg to drive, AND GOD DAM YOU GIVE ME SOME SPACE TO PUT MY STUFF!!!

rx8nizati 06-01-2007 12:54 AM

no i completely agree, after driving all those cars i get the most enjoyment out of the Rx8. I went and drove the new Z yesterday and i couldn't wait to leave and go drive my car.

you forgot to say that we now all know it actually makes 215 hp .

So we went from 280 to 215 and yet we STILL love the car .

mikeferz42 06-01-2007 01:14 AM

my 8 has 17k. i ran a 14.87 94.5 trap speed last week at infineon (about 58 degrees F). i ran against a shitty wrx driver and beat him. hope this makes you feel better.

Why would it make people feel better when the WRX is rated less than the RX-8, weighs more, has AWD drivetrain loss, and usually is about as fast or faster depending on MY (and is certainly quicker than the RX-8).

jimmyhauser 06-01-2007 10:13 AM

Sorry to go off topic, but whatever happened to the RX-7? I remember reading a couple years ago that they were going to bring it back to sell concurrently with the 8. It was to be similiar to the 8, but no back seat (?) more aggressive suspension and a turbo option. I guess that is not going to happen.

otakurx 06-01-2007 12:24 PM

There are many factors that can change the output of the motor.

Fanman 06-01-2007 12:28 PM

In Europe it was rated at 228 hp. Probably a bit more realistic, even then it might be a bt high. In SAE certified tests it ranat 232 hp at the crank, which must mean something in the driveline is junky & killing the output.

im confused. i don't know what you're saying here, but you did say that the wrx should be faster. so, an rx-8 beating a wrx ON THE STRIP should make a couple of rx-8 owners smile.
