04 auto vs 06 auto

I currently own 04 auto and as much as I love/abhor my car, the thing that bothers me the most is lack of punch. Sometimes it seems to pull strongly but sometimes it just doesn't seem to respond to my right foot.

I think this has more to do with transmission and engine's narrow power range. I am considering 06 auto that has more power (212hp from 197hp) and two extra gears (6speed from 4speed). Now question is will 06 auto have more consistent performance than 04 auto. And if so, will it be significant enough justify trading in mine and getting a new one for more money?

p.s. If anyone did quatermile run in 06 auto, can you list times you got?

SmokeyTheBalrog 12-25-2006 09:44 AM

I would suggest doing a test drive to compare.

And if your not dealing with lots of very slow stop and go traffic, consider getting a manual. It's fun. This is my first manual car, (though I've driven stick before.)

stanleylee 12-25-2006 04:37 PM

get a stick

typej 12-25-2006 04:56 PM

Please do not reply to this thread if you are gonna turn it into auto vs. stick thread. It seems like all my posts turn into that.

Stick is not an option with me. I want an opinions from maybe someone who has 06+ auto and how they feel about its performance. I really appreciate your input if you do own 06 auto.

cjkim 12-25-2006 05:18 PM

it's got a 6 port and it's got 2 more gears
of course it's going to be better... -.-
quarter miles are probably pretty close to a bad manual driver's time
is that enough for you to trade in? only you could answer that, it's your money
for the same amount of money, you could probably go FI

Don't have an 06 auto. But I'm gonna go ahead and say that, since you have an 04 auto, you would prlly be able to tell the difference with a test drive.

Have you had the recall testing? If ur 04 auto doesn't respond well to ur right foot on some occasions, but responds well on other occasions, it may not be a tranny issue.

I've had my 06 auto for 2 months now and I'm very happy with it's performance. My daily commute is heavy in traffic and therefore I needed to go with the auto....I don't regret it. The car is very responsive, especially when I drive it in manual mode.

Unlike other manu-matic cars that don't seem to have any shift shock when shifting, when I shift my car I really do feel the car lunge forward at high revs. I think you should go out and test drive one ASAP so you can decide for yourself if the difference will justify you making the transaction.

Another option is when (if ever) one of the superchargers ever get completed. Depending how much money it may cost you to get into a new one versus the cost of a S/C.

Pettit's supercharger will be finished very soon. Wait for that, put it on your auto, and watch other cars fade into your rearview mirror.

I second or 'third' that also. I have had my 06 Auto since Sep. I love it. The manual is faster, of course, but the 06 Auto is not a big let down if you have to get the auto as I did. If you really want to see how nice the 8 Auto is, test drive it vs. the 350z auto. The 8's tranny is VERY nice.

With an engine like the rotary, having a larger number of more tightly spaced ratios is a big benefit. Additional engine power also good. And the difference is probably more like 20 horsepower, because of the change in standards.

Real way to tell is as others have said, a test drive. You'll know within a minute or two.

When you say your car responds at times & doesn't at other times. Could it be heat related, meaning you have been sitting in traffic & the trans oil is hotter as is the intake temps.....???

Have noticed this on my Cosmo (4sp auto) if I am stuck in traffic

BTW. Good on you for going auto too. Some people here just dont get it that others like the car without the need to drive it hard.

Not true...if you followed the other threads, they claim their supercharged auot 8 can leave manual 8s in the dust too (I mean for that kind of money, one would hope). Don't know about anything other vehicles though. For that much cash I'd want to at least keep up with an Evo or Sti

SlayerRX8 12-31-2006 02:56 AM

The 4 port has shown higher percentage gains from the twin screw. Look back through Pettit's thread. During some of their earlier testing they got about 40whp for every 4psi from the 6 port, and 60whp for every 4psi on the 4 port. Because of different efficiency ranges, these numbers aren't exact, but think about it - once you get up to stage 3, the AT could potentially pass the MT in power.

MT - Stage 3 - 12psi - 120whp added. 180whp + 120whp = 300whp
AT - Stage 3 - 12psi - 180whp added = 130whp + 180whp = 310whp

Their AT started at 130, and that's quite low for an AT. If it started at 140-150 like they should, then you can also imagine the differences.

People keep bashing the 4 port engine, but no one has really seen it's potential yet. 300whp will be plenty to keep up with Evo's and Sti's don't you think?

dtorre 12-31-2006 04:34 AM

well your numbers there are quite funny slayer...you can't just multiply the results like that...efficiency won't work that way.......

your basically saying that pettit can offer a kit for the 4 port that will make a 138% gain at 12 psi lol not gonna happen

rxevolved 12-31-2006 08:45 AM

I believe it's not so much the 4-port engine that is the problem, but the ridiculous 4 gear transmission that's hooked up to it.

Back to the original topic - yes the 06 autos have a very signifigant improvement over the original nerf autos.
