hey bro, im from philadelphia , i have an 04 rx-8 and in my opinion with winter tires, you should be ok. just be sure to watch your speed, the rx-8 has a pretty good traction control system. hope this helps bro. i luuuuuuuuuvvvv the rx-8

I drive mine throughout winter with blizzaks of course and it gets around better then my 97 dodge neon. Also there are multiple threads about this so try looking around a bit more. Zoom44 has an entire winter thread that will answer all your questions.

Winter tires make ALL of the difference.

I have to turn traction control off to manage snow.

Winter tires are a must but with a proper set the car does great in the snow. I'm just (hopefully soon) wrapping up my 7th Minnesota winter with my RX-8...

Unique_Rx-8 03-02-2011 03:15 PM

thanks again this is very helpful

Hmm, I live in California now, but lived in Montreal for pre 2007, I don't know how our winters compare to yours, I assume yours are pretty harsh as well. I would NOT drive an RX8 after the snow really kicks in. Even heavier rwd cars are annoying, a lightweight rwd car like the RX8 is disaster waiting to happen. Honestly, I would just spend a little cash on a cheap winter car to drive while garaging the 8' for a few months ( also it saves your car from the salt pretty much rusting everything to shit).

There are going to be people who say "oh but in theory the friction force doesn't depend on mass because it cancels itself out" . No, the heavier cars plough a lot more snow so they stop more easily, they also displace more snow underneath the tires.

What will happen in the rx8 is when you break the car will tailspin like crazy on snow or slushy roads. Another thing that happens is when you accelerate decently hard on those kinds of roads, the rear tires suddenly get way more grip than the front due to kicking the snow or slush out from underneath it and meets the ground with way more friction and.... you tailspin.

does it tailspin a lot or does it get stuck? which does more or both.

Both, but getting stuck I don't consider a big deal, I'll just call someone to help me out. I guess I'm over-stating my case about the tailspin, but if you ask the question "good" in the winter, I'd say no. You might be able to counter it with really good winter tires. Really though, why would you want to harm the 8' by driving it in the winter, just get a winter beater.

mazdaverx7 03-03-2011 02:39 PM

i have driven my 8 in the snow and i must say that even with all season tires its excellent. the dynamic stability control helps leaps and bounds and while the traction control can be a hinderance sometimes but it can also be very helpful. compared to any of my RX-7's, the 8 is maaaaarvelous in the snow.

Unique_Rx-8 03-03-2011 03:32 PM

thanks again, and the reason why is because i got to pay for the 8 insurance then buy a nother car while payig for insurance and i got to pay two diff car insurances and my insurance isnt good cause we dont own a car.

mazda rx8 good take off?

Since I am interested in a 8, I was wondering if they are fast, I know they have the same top speed as a 350z and g35 at 155mph but the rx8 only has 159 torque with only 238 hp. So my question is... Are they fast acceleration?

-thank you for the people that helped.

I have 2004 rx8 since 2005 and have drived it all winters. I am really surprised how well it handles also in winter, I (nor my wife!) have never spinned or got stuck (still amazed about this), stability system kicks in more often in winter (in a nice way). Location Estonia (winters are occasionally -25 celsius). And get the best tires that there are.

mazda rx8 questions

1. what the hell is 2 cyl and 3 cyl? thought it was a rotary so it would be rotary 2? Correct?

2. Is a mazda rx8 safe?
3. Any diference between 05 rx8 and a 07 rx8?

thank you for all your replies

I have a set of winter tires forsale. They are in Rockford, IL.. Im sure you know where that is. let me know if you need them

monchie 03-14-2011 02:11 AM

Here in Las Vegas, it gets very cold too. Ever since i've been here, the lowest i've known was 23 degrees. That is very cold in the desert. My car didn't have problems with the "very cold" and the "very hot" weather we have here in the desert. Just maintain your car and do preventive maintenance and you'll be just fine.

Ive been driving my 06 GT all winter up here in Michigan. Been driving on the same all season tires she came with back in September...not one single issue with driving on ice or snow...I am very pleased with this car!!
