Stick around the forum for a few months and keep your eyes on the FS section and someone will probably sell a turbocharged 8. It is always cheeper to let someone else do the mods. Of course it always makes you wonder how it was driving and taken care of. Either way be patient and it will pay off.

Evo

/Thread

Highway8 11-14-2008 09:38 PM

I drove a brand new 09 evo and I was not impressed. It did not feel that fast and it felt like I was driving my civic. I know they are fast in a straight line and on a track and with minor mods they get even faster but in the end its not a sports car and its not a muscle car, it's just a high performance 4 door compact.

The subra was a great car for its time and is still a great drag strip car but it is too heavy, it is an okay sports car.

To each his own but to the OP, you need to think about what you enjoy most about driving and what you can and can not live without then find the car that meets those needs. I think a FI (turbo or SC) RX8 is a great compromise between handling (near perfect), power (faster then most things on the road but it will never be a drag car), comfort (much more comfortable then most muscle cars and it has a good back seat), price (very good value if you buy carefully) and driving experiance (always rated very high).

TopGear8 11-14-2008 09:50 PM

Buy an 06-07' RX8. Put a nice kit on it, some wheels, suspension, and turbo it. You will have a very unique ride. that is decently fast.

^+1

when I first saw this I thought th OP already had an 8 and was gonna get 25k in mods, I was like oh good god

Fortunate Few 11-14-2008 10:10 PM

since i already have an rx8 id get a rx7 :) thats my dream car. if not then an evo!

I would say be patient, hunt around for a really good deal and put your money where it will make you the most money...real estate. I bought a house for my mother at a great price. If you buy a cheap house for yourself, the mortgage interest will be tax deduction. You built wealth through equity and the military pays you BAH (I get it while on active duty and it rocks).

To be named later 11-14-2008 10:20 PM

Personally, if I was in your situation, with the economy going in the crapper and possibly a severe recession and high inflation that may last years, the smartest thing to do is to not put the money in an asset that will depreciate.

I appraised a house today for $29,000, that sold for $99,000 just two years ago.
Once the housing market rebounds, within a couple years, that house will be worth at least $99,000 again. That next car you buy for $25,000.........will be worth +/- $15K.

ShinkaTeen 11-14-2008 11:35 PM

...

buy a 95 suby R.S.

and turbo charge that hoe.

......

or get the 8 if you really like it. im sure you can get an r3 with that if its cash. i bet you can even go lower.

Renesis07 11-15-2008 06:56 AM

Right now is the best time to invest in stuff since the market is slow. I would say buy a cheap used 04-05 RX8 with <50K miles on it (which you can find in excellent condition for <12K) Pay cash for that, to avoid interest on a loan. Then put the rest away in some sort of fund that will yield a return. Be smart, use some to have a little fun then put the rest away. Youll feel like a jackass at 30 if you spent all 25K on a car that lasted for 4-5 years which you traded in for 7,000 trade in value to get into a loan that you will be paying on. Think about it.

The RX7 is far from better reliability even if it were the same age as the 8. On top of that, it's not. lol We're talking 10-15 year old car here. I did 6 years in the military. You and I both know you don't have time to be dickin around with your daily driver.

The S2000 is small. DAMN small. Miata small. I've drivin several of them. If you can handle the tiny-ness, keep it on the list.

An EVO and STI is a good chunk more expensive than the others. Kinda unfair to have it compared to cars under $20k....

I own an 8, and have drivin a 350Z several times. It's faster.

Renesis07 11-15-2008 08:35 AM

The 350Z is very reliable (04 + ), I used to be a internet sales manager at a nissan stores and those things were tanks as far as the engine goes. Hardly ever saw them in service and Id seen a couple with well over 100K roll through for oil changes without an oil leak and lookin brand new.

Cheap product though, interiors go to shit after a year or two.

lilturbododge 11-15-2008 09:01 AM

Skyline, Supra, Vette, or Viper...ride in style and don't look like everyone else out there :)

rockle3 11-15-2008 09:07 AM

skyline- 60-80K
Supra- 20-25K
Vette- 60K
Viper- 85K

First off, he said he has 25,000 :uhh: , only one on that list that he MIGHT be able to afford is the Supra.

Good advice. Especially when were in an economic crisis, advise someone to buy a super car that will be worth half when he drives off the lot.

I seriously hope your not a financial advisor

Is your RX8 FI ?

onefatsurfer 11-15-2008 09:32 AM

get a used elise.. 25k can just about buy one. they're fast as hell, fun as hell, and reliable.

Razz1 11-15-2008 10:51 AM

Buy my high performance 8.

rx8dad 11-15-2008 11:23 AM

'08 RX-8

Dealers are blowing them out.

Get it quick for best selection.

Includes new car warranty.

User24 11-15-2008 11:36 AM

Just spend half of that for a used rx8.

The "first car, new car" romance factor lasts between 1 and 3 years, then you stop washing it every day and it is just another way to get from point A to B.

The rest for savings account or similar.

There's going to be far more important things to buy in the next 5 years than just stupid cars.

jjc3925 11-15-2008 12:04 PM

I would say depends on a lot of things....do you want to be able to fit more ppl in the car or are you okay with a 2 seaters. personally i like being able to fit more than just one passenger and i like the performance in the evo and sti but dont like the whole 4 door look to them. so my choice from your list would be the rx8.

if u dont care about just having 2 seats id go either RX7 or S2000. my friend has a Z and im just not a big fan of it...power is nice.

my father owned a boxster and i enjoy driving my rx8 more than i did his boxster.

Id say go test all of them and see what u like

newguy 11-15-2008 01:28 PM

for 6 grand buy a modded 90-94 Talon or Eclipse and run high 11s- low 12s. you may spend some time/money getting the body/paint right and a few bucks to freshen up the interior but its hard to beat cheap speed. and keep a spare transaxle/center diff handy. i miss mine sometimes
