New Here... (long story) Lots of pics!! Update 08/12/2014

UPDATE!!! 08/12/2014

Hello my fellow rx8 rotary lovers... I'm new here, Kinda. been a member Since July of 2012.

let me first start with some backround.

I am from Gilroy, CA. went to San Diego to purchase my 2004 Mazda RX-8 GT. Lightning Yellow. she was a beauty, fully loaded, heated seats, leather, Bose,
sport pckge etc etc...

Brought her home, (thanks to this forum i've been making full use of the "Search" function.)

Because of a CEL. i replaced the coils, plugs, wires, air filter and gas cap.
she ran superb for a few months, then my uh "bearing" for the tranny went out. forgot what it was called, so i went ahead and replaced the clutch with a Exedy Organic clutch kit. (no more Slipping) purchased at 62k miles.

First things i did was window tint, paint stock rims Black, put in Grom Bluetooth to stream music via my iphone BLuetooth. then i put in a Single Alpine Type-R 10" Sub. and Alpine Mono AMP. sat on that untill april-may 2013.

Here are pics of it stock...with tint and system

Then Between April-May 2013 the MOD bug got a hold of me and i started making large orders of parts... i was already lurking these forums and Google, i knew what i wanted.

The Paint Process...

Hmm. You realize that the published world record for a Renesis is somewhere about 500whp? And that engine didn't last very long at all.

Perhaps you mean the 13b from an RX-7? Completely different motor, and swapping it is no simple matter.

sry, but 600 renny won't last long, not even the 13b-rew.
Why not do 20b swap?

And who is this builder?

Welcome to the forums, it certainly looks like you have lofty goals. RIWWP told me to be nice so...

600 whp is not possible on a Renesis. As far as I'm aware not only is it not being done on a "daily basis" it's never been done even once, by any rotary builder in the entire world. 600 whp 13B-REW motors are more common, but notoriously unreliable. The Renesis motor differs significantly from the 13B-REW from the RX-7, particularly in the exhaust ports. It was not designed as a turbocharged motor and has proven to be extremely difficult to turbocharge even with modest power goals (~300 whp). The highest whp Renesis that I'm aware of was running on E85 at just over 500 whp before it exploded nearly immediately.

I ran a turbo RX-8 at 330 whp for over a year, and now race a 500+ whp Evo so I have some idea of what I'm talking about. I don't mean to sh*t on your goals, but you should probably spend some more time in the Major Horsepower forum to get a more reasonable gauge on what is possible.

Best of luck with your car!

You definitely chose the BEST color for this car

You say MS urethane kit, so then it is not authentic. I can't see much from the picture, but what was your overall fitment/fitment issues that you experienced?

Very organized and very nice car. I too agree that 600whp is really pushing it, but money can do crazy things

Thanks for all the input guys, i have considered a lot of other options ie: 20b, 13b-rew, 3 rotor convert, ls2, etc...

i've owned many different cars, 04 GTO, 95 Integra (boost), 05 S2000, 95 M3, 01 Prelude,
The RX8 by far is the most fascinating and pain in my a** haha... but i enjoy it, its a sports car... just like the others i've owned, aside from the Integra.

however, i want to stick to the renesis, build it, studs, water jackets seals, exhaust/intake ports, apex seals, half bridge, run on e85, run a 6466 BB turbo, etc etc....

the 600whp may not be possible but i'd like to try...and my engine build budget is 10k
and turbo build budget is 6k. i want the renesis because of the RPM range of 9k and the powerband i would be able to utilize, (the other motors, 20b, 13b rew, i believe redline at 6-7k rpm)

I have spent a lot of time around boosted cars and building them, i had a Acura integra a while back putting down 536whp 91oct/water/meth inj. 50/50, 6262, 25lbs... my Twin brother, (yes i have a identical twin) chose to go the american auto maker route, and has a 05 Dodge SRT-4 built from the oil pan up! we got that to put down 913whp on e85 with a BB 6466. that car is driven 3 days a week lol. so i am very familiar with power and what it takes to get there, especially the $$$ part. However, i know the Renesis is a sensitive motor compared to these that i've built and drove before, i've done a lot of reading on this motor and i know it isn't the best in the world to make ridiculous HP. but i'd like to try.. i enjoy a good challenge. plus i love the smoothness of the motor and i love my RX8.

if i blow it up on the dyno trying to hit my goal, then i'll suck it up and build a 20B. to put in.
i am extremely fascinated with the rotary engine and would like to stick to it, but i am open to other options (ls3) etc.

The builders shop is in LA, name of (GarageLife)

Yes the Poly Urethane kit is a Replica, it was a B**** to get genuine OEM mazdaspeed as it was discontinued, i was originally going to purchase through a website i found here, i placed the order and 2 weeks later they told they couldnt fulfill my order, out the door price was around 3K. do i serched more and found the REPLICE urethane kit, cost me 2k which include the CF rep wing.

the overall fitment was pretty good! the shop only had to do minor shaving/sanding to smooth out some places. no real fitment issues, fit pretty well.

The color took me a while to choose but thank you! i do believe it was the best color i could pick.

if anyone is curious
the paint code is: Y-65P

BTW... PICS ARE UP!

I thought fitment was kinda bad around the hood area. Well, I'm glad you will attempt a High Horsepower build. I hope you document well and keep us updated. I also would like dibs on a part out if it happens in the future lol
Good Luck man

If you had done the research you are claiming you would know that none of those measures will improve the engines resistance to detonation or ability to handle boost. I've had a fully built, ported, doweled, upgraded seals Renesis built and ended up selling it when I realized it did nothing to provide additional security for a turbo setup. In fact, the main reason that Renesis turbo engines fail (side seals) cannot be improved by any current aftermarket parts.

You are throwing your money away. I spent significantly more than your listed budget to get a "reliable" 330 whp Renesis.

All rotary engines can have the same powerband and redline. The reason many 13B-REW engines shift earlier is due to the turbo altering the torque curve, making it pointless to rev to 9000 rpms. The same effect occurs on a Renesis with a properly sized turbo. I have no idea who told you that the Renesis had some sort of improved power band or rev range, but that is flatly wrong. You need to do a LOT more reading.

Your budget doesn't even come close to the cost of a 20B swap. You are looking at a minimum of $30k for a 20B swap unless you are doing all the labor yourself. For your budget, the best choice for the platform is actually doing a 13B-REW swap. There are a handful of guys on this forum with very clean REW RX-8s which they were able to do for a budget similar to yours.

I'm trying to help you save tens of thousands of dollars, because I went down this path with much more realistic goals and flushed that money down the toilet. If you continue at this point, it isn't because you didn't have the information available to you.

I just googled GarageLife, and I was right, RX-7 builds.

The 13b in the RX-7 is NOT the same engine as the 13b in the RX-8. Seemingly minor differences that have a huge impact on the Renesis' ability to make high power.

The list of items you have may address immediate survival problems, but in the end, you have the same biggest problem that every other high horsepower Renesis faces: Side seal heat. Adding power to a Renesis directly increases the amount of heat you are shoveling through the side exhaust ports, and the higher the heat goes, the more the side seal springs start warping. Once they warp far enough to push the side seal out of place, the seal clips the exhaust port and boom, engine shatters. There is NO known way to get around this problem. The only way to improve the lifespan of the engine is to literally reduce power. The lower power you aim for, the longer the engine will last before the same problem happens.

This is assuming that every single piece of the entire build is PERFECT, and it has to be perfect on the very first try. The engine has zero tolerance for flaws when boosted.

We aren't flaming or bashing you, we are trying to educate you so you don't waste your money. Sure, use the budget for a turbo build, but you clearly are missing some of the critical pieces of information, and with that budget you should be able to hit about 300whp reasonably well and get maybe 20-30k out of it. Maybe.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm convinced on doing a 13b-rew swap. I missed the "side seal" part, should have read more in depth... I guess it's a good thing I finally introduced myself and lay out my plans?

13B-REW swaps are very cool. One of the cleanest ones I've seen on here is:

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-multime...rx-8-a-219966/

You might ask him some questions about his build, but I believe he's been very happy with the car.

It's a very rare new forum poster who is able to listen and absorb advice when they conflict with their plans. Best of luck with your car. Btw, I do love the paint. :D

Well I am fairly new to the rotary game, and
It is very different to boost compared to a piston platform like I've done before, so I am open to feedback and listening to the ones who know more and have been around these engines more than I have... I could have wasted a lot of money if it hadn't been for you guys telling me about the side seal and spring failure. And to date apparently there is no known mod or fix. And to reach my power goals it realistically isn't possible with the renesis... Btw my budget is not capped it was either dump a lot of money into the 8, or buy a 2nd toy (supra) and make a freeway queen.

Sorry about that haha. Swapped a 13b-rew, built it, Bridgeport, did a Garrett GTX4202r turbo, flex fuel, 6 injectors etc etc etc.... lol used the 6 speed for a bit. Swapped in the rx8 5 speed from Japan. Car made a little over 700whp on e85..... check my Instagram page.

I have a great question for you. Are you using adaptronics? If so, what is the first trigger angle number from aligning your motor?
