Advice on 13b-T and SE3P Transmission combo

I hope that someone can help me.


I am looking to do the series 5 swop in my RX8 and keeping the RX8 6 speed box.


I do have the series 5 5speed box also. I just think it will fit better with the RX bell housing.


My question is, is it possible?


Final hope is the 13b-T with GT35 looking for 400Bhp reliable.

Why swap in a 13BT, if you are doing the swap just use a 13BREW and use an existing mounting solution (Banzai racing) that will allow you to bolt it right up to the REW. Installing a 13BT will require just as much work if not more.

Main reason for the 13B-T is the price, I got a very good deal on a complete motor and Tranny. Motor has been overhauled with high compression seals.


I would have gone the REW route if it was worth it. But buying a motor from an importer here in South Africa. It usually means stripping and doing an overhaul. Meaning more $$$$


So to make it worth it for me I'm considering the 13B-t over the REW bases on above mentioned.


Now all I need to know is my original question of fitting the 13B-T Bellhousing to the SE3P gearbox.

How you mount the engine in the car will determine whether you can use the RX-8 transmission or not.

If you are worried about saving money on an engine then a swap is probably not a reasonable undertaking for you. The fact that you needed to ask these questions in the first place means you likely cannot complete this swap.

Also, I am not sure on the FC, but the FD and RX-8 use different types of clutches, push vs. pull. But really reading the existing threads will do you a lot better than starting this one.

But the fact that I'm asking the question I'm asking has nothing to do with the budget of the project. The fact that I'm getting a complete rebuild engine and thus saving money also has nothing to do with the budget.

Sure it matters, because choosing the wrong engine just to save some money now makes no sense when it will require more fabrication and planning to get it to work. You may not have seeked criticism but I am just shootin' you straight. Proper, Prior, Planning.

The biggest difference in the FC engine and the FD (REW) is the way the motor mounts are implemented. Power wise they are basically the same up to 400hp so you won't have issues with either. If you are doing the mounts yourself then you won't find either more difficult. Just different.

Your best option for tranny would be for you to get an RX8 5 speed. It is basically a FD spec tranny with the correct attachments for the powerplant frame. The 6 speed will fail fast around 400HP

Yeah that build was/is a mess. We had a local guy (not part of our group) try this swap as well and eventually just gave up mid way due to a serious lack of research and planning. It can be done of course.

The S5 engine will bolt direct to the RX-8 trans, the RX-8 clutch will even bolt directly to the FC flywheel.

As mentioned previously, mounting the engine in the car is the tricky part, since the FC motor mount brackets are on the center iron and the turbo side bolts to the bottom of the engine.

As far as power goes the REW is far more capable then the S5 TII. The rotors are the same weight and compression ratio but the iron casting and intake manifolds are completely different.

If I recall the FD rotors are lighter...and have slightly higher compression ratio

A lot of the drag guys are using the T2 rotors and lightening them up to the same weight as the FD rotors....the tub faces on the T2 rotors are thicker and take more abuse is the theory

You are recalling completely wrong.

S5 is the exact same as the FD & Cosmo. The S4 TII rotors are heavier, with lower compression.

This is not "top secret" information, it has been around for decades, literally.

yeah i just got my hands on a 13b-t, im guessing its from a series 4. Anyhow i too am going through alot of research and reading just to plan things out. Especially for mounting the engine to the chassis and to fit it to the rx8 tranny.

So far from other threads especially from the rx7 club. there was this dude who did the transplant however he was "exceptional" as he owns his own fabrication and stuff. So alot of fabrication to the mounting point and the tranny is still something im trying to digest.

13B-RE is a completely different style of mounting and has virtually no similarities to the 13B-T with exception to the front cover. It shares more parts with the 13B-REW as far as casting are concerned however the engine mounts are on either side of the engine.

Hi Banzai....i know this is sort of a noob question. but any difference between a 13bt and 13b-re?. i mean how would i know if im using a bt or re?.

i got a couple of pics of the engine which im yet to take apart sometime after i get all the needed tools. Perhaps i can send some pics to you so that at least i know what engine im working on?.

The 13bre is actually easier to mount-if you are not buying ready made mounts for it. Some of the mounting holes are the same as the rx8(I think 2), then there's a little cut&paste. I also drilled & tapped the middle and front iron on the exhaust side.

Everything but the front cover is different. The dead giveaway is that the RE says 13B-RE on the intake manifold.
