Very close to buying one, but....

Hey all,

I need an advise. There's a listing for a MY04 8, GT S.Silver for $23900. I ran a CARFAX on it and found that it was in a minor accident:
This coupe has had 1 owner in Michigan. The first title for this coupe was reported to CARFAX by a Michigan DMV in 2004. It was involved in an accident in Michigan that was reported to the police.
It has had no DMV-reported total loss events, like a major accident, fire or flood.
It has not been reported by a DMV as having an Exceeds Mechanical Limits or Not Actual Mileage title.
It has a consistent mileage history with no indication of an odometer rollback. The last odometer reading, reported on 04/21/2004, was 175 miles.
It was not reported by a DMV as a Manufacturer Buyback (LEMON).
It has no recalls that still require repair.
CARFAX estimates it has 39 months or 49,825 miles remaining on the basic warranty.
Go to the Detailed Vehicle History for the complete history and a glossary of terms.
Looks like owner was in a minor accident with damage to the left rear fendor. Accident was in May and he sold to dealer in December.
Accident Report Date: Source: Detail:
05/14/2004 Michigan Police Report Accident Reported
in Wayne County
Involving a left rear impact
with another motor vehicle
Very minor damage reported
The car being sold at a dealer in Michigan and I'm in Ohio and I've been in contact with the dealers only by phone, but I haven't mentioned the CARFAX. What do you guys think overall about the situation, and do you think $23,900 is a fair price?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you could find a better deal elsewhere. Even though a minor accident is not the end of the world, why even mess with it. If you are still interested in this vehicle, I would tell the dealer the info you've discovered and offer 20K.

I'm not sure if this is the way to go. Yes, it has the GT package and all, but I'm not sure if this "minor damage" issue will be the end of it. I think that if you're purchasing a car like this one, you should get one brand new or a used one from a source that it's easier to deal with (not over the phone) or more legitimate..

good luck

How many miles on it now? I would definately consider it because it was only cosmetic and not critical mechanical damage. Check out the left rear and fender really closely. Show them the car fax and negotiate the price a little bit. $23.9 k is already cheap though. Again, depends on mileage and other options besides having gt- app package, nav, spoiler, strakes, minor dings, etc etc.

Thanks for your input guys. The car has appx. 9000K miles. It has the appearance package, plus spoiler. It does not have Navigation.

I agree that $23,900 is pretty cheap already, but may consider offering $20K. My contact is the Dealer's internet sales manager, and I've asked him to provide me with close up shots of the car from various angles.

Anyone here have a similar experience of having to pick a car that you knew was in an accident, minor or major?
