Salvage Title---2004---rx8
 

Ok so ive read up on them, im pretty mechanically inclined, and i owned an old rx7, so im not new to the rotary engine. I found a 2004 Rx8 with 75000 miles on it, for under 5000 (i can talk him down to 5000 i think). it had a bad wreck on the front end, but it has all been repaired ( so he claims). It needs a part for the AC and check engine is on for the o2 sensor. My question IS, what do yall recommend, its a BADASS deal if its legit, but it also has no warranty. I plan to have my mechanic look over it before i buy it, but other then that whats your recommendation???

Also what will i need to do when I drive it?? (ive read it but i like to her answers to my personal situation) Ive heard the oil every other fill up (i am a poor college kid so i plan to do every 500 miles cause every other fill up at 10 dollars a fill up is quite often)

I plan to have 1000-1500 EXTRA cash on top of the buying price.

test drive it, make sure it HANDLES real good...a bent frame isnt good

top off oil every fill up not full changes thats overy kill. I dont like salvaged repaired cars cause you dont know the work underneth, but if its all in worknig order not a bad deal

Eeesh.....kinda scary. I would stay away, especially since you can pick up an 8 with a clean title, frame, and that many miles with another 6 grand.

You say top off, how much oil do they burn, as in do you carry a quart of oil with you, or a case?? Also ive heard horrible horrible things about these cars, is it that they r idiots, dont let it heat up, and dont put oil in it, or are some really bugged??

yeah just carry a quart with you, and YES youve only heard from idiots...this is a sports car and it does need to be maintained... maintain it good and it will treat you good

not much.... it has a oil low level indicatior. i carry a quart at most, i usaly just stick the rest of the 5 qt bottle in the trunk since it doesnt use very much.

the car is pretty stupid proof, low oil, low coolant lights.

OK thank you!! i figured quite a few were idiots, specially when they complained about the gas mileage, its an effing sports car, you want milage get a camry. As far as the getting an 08 goes for anotehr 6000, if i had the 6000 i would do it in a milisecond, the fact is this is my dream car, ive wanted one since i drove my friends back in 05, and i saw this as my chance to do it....the only down side is its yellow lol

yellows are RARE, is it and AT or MT?

Hey man if it's your dream car I don't blame you for one second on jumping on it! Best of luck to you, and I hope the damage doesn't exceed the value. +1 on keeping the oil with you too. At least a quart. Is there any visable damage on the undercarriage? Or have you not seen the car yet?

automatic or stick shift?

Stick shift, i had planned on having it painted like almost the second i got it lol, should i not??

thats up to you...stick shift is the best, you get the most outta the car with an MT...have you test drivin it?

No, the guy wants to trade me my M5 (1992) for it, im still debating, he wants to do an even trade, but his car is selling for 5 and i can sell mine easily for 6, so imma try to either get 1000 from him or sell mine first. but i wanted to make sure i knew what i was getting into (literally) before i went down there and looked at it

i wouldn't do it. 04s are notoriously troublesome. And wrecked ones can't be much better. Maybe for 3k or 4k, but 5 is too much.
you're gonna end up paying on tires if the frame is still bent at all. and there's no warranty, i'm sure.
too many problems can crop up on a car like that, and they'll ending up costing you in the long run.
you're better off just putting the 5k down on one with a warranty that you can finance.

can you even register a salvage vehicle? i am clueless on anything to do with them but seems like you wouldn't be able to.

When a vehicle has been wrecked or damaged so badly that the cost of repairing or rebuilding is 80% or more of the cost to completely replace the vehicle, then it's considered a salvage. Often it's then taken to a salvage yard for destruction.

Before getting rid of your salvage vehicle, however, you must apply for a salvage certificate of title. If you're handling the damaged vehicle through an insurance company, usually the insurance company will take care of this for you. If you're not affiliated with an insurance company, please call DMV Customer Service at (850) 617-2000 for instructions on obtaining a salvage title. You can also download the Application for Salvage Title.

To obtain a salvage title, bring the following to your tax collector's office:

Completed Application for Salvage Title.
One of the following: the vehicle's original Florida certificate of title, the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO), or an out-of-state title.
Applicable fees (contact your local office for fee schedule, as it may vary by county).
TOP1) When Rebuilding is a Possibility
Sometimes a car has suffered extensive damage, but doesn't meet the 80% rule to be legally declared salvage. In that case, a Salvage Rebuildable title may be issued.

The tricky part begins when you wish to purchase a vehicle that has been rebuilt from salvaged parts. This industry has been damaged by too many cases of fraud and dishonesty, so protecting yourself is very important.

A rebuilt vehicle should always have a notice on the title stating that it is rebuilt. The owner will also receive a decal that must be placed on the car, signifying its rebuilt status.

TOP2) Buyer Beware
It's a third-degree felony to knowingly misrepresent a rebuilt vehicle to a prospective buyer. But unfortunately, it still happens. You can protect yourself as a buyer by requesting a title search on the vehicle.

DMV.ORG can run this vehicle history report for a reasonable fee. It can tell you where the car was previously registered, whether the vehicle was salvaged, recalled or damaged by flood, and also if the odometer reading is correct.

i hear all the logical arguements, and they all hurt lol. Yall are killing my little yellow rx8 dream, i might be able to talk him down to 4500, and yea salvage titles are registerable...i think...any info on that would be nice too, what i figure is, he claims its only the condenser, and o2 sensor, if i take it to somewhere that does one of those like 2 million point inspections and they say that car is good except for this this this and this, and we will repair that for X my goal is initial cost plus X has to equal around 6000, if i can get that, and if i can get a clean bill of health on the frame, then i figure its a good deal....oh yea and it runs, so i can test drive it as can the shop.

ok, so get the vin, and pay the dmv to look all that info up for me. seems simple enough....just more money :(....and if it ends up to be a big fat lemon, then i paid all for nothing....but im optimistic so back to my rx8 dream LOL
