RX-8 Pricing

Okay here are all the cost to the dealer and the hidden charges.
I do not know why the OPTIONS on the Manual Transmission are cheaper. Can someone help me here?

Invoice Price of Base Model with Automatic = 23794

Invoice Price of Base Model with Standard = 25180

MSRP Price of Base Model with Automatic = 25700

MSRP Price of Base Model with Standard = 27200

Appearance Option AT = 970
Apearance Option MT = 970

Sport Option AT = 1800
Sport Option MT = 1100

Touring Option AT = 3500
Touring Option MT = 2700

Grand Option AT = 4600
Grand Option MT= 3900

To figure out dealer price:

Base invoice price + options - holdback - rebates/incentives = dealer cost
Hold Back on the RX-8 is 3% of Base MSRP (2% on other Mazda's)

So if your buying a new RX-8 at MSRP the dealer is making Approx. $3440 and up + additional mark-up if the dealer has marked it up more.

I do not know about everyone else here but I do not want to give my money away on a 3440+ profit. I have done a lot of searching and request too. The best price I have got back is 26500 plus taxes and tags and a free RX-8 car cover so far on a Automatic with the sport package. I am still trying to lower this price. Anywhere between 1000 to 1500 over dealer cost I would consider a reasonable deal. So with that in mind ... get out there and start dealing if we all hold off they will start to deal better and stop marking the cars up over and above the already 3440 profit they have on them from the factory. If you feel you just need to give your money away. Drop me a line I will give you my address where you can send your extra money to me. Trust me I would really like more money!

So the hold back for RX-8 is 3%. On a nice GT package the dealer is making a tidy 10% profit on the car. And they are still marking it up above MSRP, insane..

Anyway, zoomzoom, is correct. In a few months time, if not now, you will be able to negotiate a better deal. Paying over MSRP is crazy, considering the 'sizeable' amount of profit that they are already making.

Zoom, someone posted the dealer invoice here:

One reason for the Sport package to be cheaper on the MT is that part of those options are installed as part of the base MT model. Hence the difference in the base price of the MT and the AT.
Traditionally, the MT is the cheaper base model...

$1000 over dealer cost is not even 3% ROI, and these guys do have to make a living and help the economy. I do agree that $3440 it’s a bit much (Supply-Demand 11% ROI), but I still think is a fair deal. I'm financing my car and the payments would be $10 a month lower with $500 below MSRP. I rather walk into the dealership, pay with the finance check, and walk out w/o getting into price bargaining. I've bargained the price of each car I have bought and it just ruins the experience of getting a new car, unless you're into bargaining or bargain shopping, like my wife. This time I'm going to treat myself.

Um, I see some fuzzy math. $3400 gross dealer profit?

Automatic MSRP = $25,700
Holdback=$25,700 X 3%= $771.00

(MSRP) - (INVOICE) + (Dealer Holdback) = Dealer Profit
$25,700 - $23794 + $771.00 = $2,677

How did you get $3400+.
BTW the dealer doesnt see all the holdback. Eventhough they have the vehicles on the lot, a bank or holding company forwards the money on each vehicle to pay Mazda (or any Manafacturer) while on the lot. If you have seen the invoices, usu a bank or holding company has it on there. Part of the holdback is designed to help pay some of the interest charges and fees while the vehicle is on the lot. It is not designed for money "heldback" from the customers.

RX-8 Zoom Zoom, it sounds like you have a great deal there. Don't talk yourself out of a good deal or have the vehicle sold to someone else just because you want the dealership to have a certain amount of profit.

If you found out what profit other companies are making that you don't have access to, you'll have a heart attack. 10% profit on a $30k item is unheard of in other industries. Your buying the car at MSRP you are doing well on the RX-8. Less than, your doing awesome.

Just my 2 cents.

If you can get that price on an RX-8, you ought to snap it up. Check out the True Market Value on Edmunds.com- it's only about $50 less than MSRP. Take what you've got and run- you've got an incredible deal right now.

And please, guys, let's not get into the whole "dealer makes THIS much" debate again- there are a lot of factors that go into how everyone at a dealership is paid. And just like you don't want them jerking you around, they don't appreciate it when you jerk them around either.

I'll repost my reply:

At this stage in the game, I'd be very surprised if anyone got the 8 for much less than MSRP. Maybe later in the year or next year you could deal.

As for the 8 you got a price on....

1 - This dealer prob can't get rid of it since it's AT and many people are waiting for the MTs to arrive.

2 - This is prob their demo/test drive vehicle and has many miles on it already. The three at my dealer are ALL ATs and the red one I test drove had 150+ miles on it. I was going to inquire about the silver with nav, but my sales rep advised me to wait for the one I pre-orderd b/c in his words, "these cars are being pushed hard." Oh, not to mention all the scuff marks and scratches that are all over all three's interiors.

If I am correct about the car you were quoted a price on... I wouldn't want it.

justinm2 07-23-2003 04:12 PM

Most of the dealerships signed up for the rotary road show which gives them an extra rx-8 in their allocation, but by getting that extra car, they have to promise to keep at least one rx-8 in inventory at all times for testdrives and the such. The one at the dealership i used to work for has been there for a little over a week, and has had the shit beat out of it. (owner still won't let me drive it ). personally i would advise not buying the roadshow car that has been used for testdrives. The people test driving the car arn't too bad, but the majority of the salesmen will flat out abuse a car.

Let me make

mx5-->rx8 07-23-2003 06:40 PM

In Las Vegas there is one dealer with two lots. When I looked last weekend, the posted "Market Value Adjustment" was +$2,500. This is in addition to some "non-negotiable" dealer add ons at what looked to be inflated prices.

I know Edmunds for my zip showed the car at -50 TMV for the MSRP, but I have no idea where they are getting their data. I was wondering if the the gouging, (sorry), premium pricing, common in the Vegas market was common elsewhere or whether it was just a product of having no local competition and no nearby cities to provide competition.

As for me, I'll either wait for more reasonable pricing and terms or move off to a competing car. The one dealer thing bothers me as well since there is little incentive to be competitive with customer service.

Magnesium 07-23-2003 06:53 PM

Currently the "premium pricing" is in effect for most dealers.

mx5-->rx8 07-23-2003 08:22 PM

With regard to the "premium pricing" thing, I was just mainly curious. On other threads there is news of 5-8k for over MSRP pricing by some dealers, so 2.5k doesn't sound way too outrageous.

I can certainly wait, while being an early adopter may be cool, it isn't cool enough for me to pay the premium. I also have many months before I'll need one more seat than my Miata has.

Maybe it is actually a good sign, especially if the dealers find a receptive market. It means that the car can inspire demand in excess of the anticipated demand, even if the MSRP+ days are short. It has been a while since Mazda released a car that was attractive enough for some to actually pay over the MSRP. Witness the 6, an excellent car in the family sedan market, released as a 2003 model in December it was quickly being discounted and made elligible for favorable financing.

I hope this is a sign that the RX-8 will be a commercial success and I hope it encourages Mazda to make rumors of a new RX-7 come true.

So much for negotiation

I tried to negotiate and they thought I was crazy. I paid full sticker $31,495 GT 6m w/spare

Other area dealers are now beginning to ask premium markups - $5000 on the east coast (FL) and this I understand is confirmed now (my dealer originally told me) by others on this site from Miami. I am glad to have the car. I cannot beleive the people honking and thumbs up. I am the only one in the area - for now.
