Reliability
Hey guys
I don't really know a lot about rx8's and I was wondering about how many miles can be put on a rotary engine before it needs to be rebuilt? In order to get a low interest rate I'm asking my dad to co sign for me but he wont do it for an rx8 because he doesnt trust the rotary engine. So any advice would be great and sorry if this question has been answered a thousand times I couldnt really find an answer to my question. |
I know there's one.. maybe two people on this board who have over 100k on their RX8's with original engines.
|
to tell you the truth your dad should do the research i did it for my three girls and he can do it for you.
|
See the thing is I have an R6 right now and I've put over 25k miles on it in 6 months so I do need a car that will last
|
The rotary engine has been around for a very very very long time. You should ask your dad why he thinks it's not going to last as long as a "regular" engine and when he responds "well, uh.. it's just something i heard", tell him to stop listening to homeless people at the bus stop.

The RX7 guys would have a bone to pick with your dad as well. You might also want to explain to your dad the difference between the number 7 and the number 8.

My father-in-law was telling me how some snowmobiles use rotary engines...or use too. I own a MS VR RX and just love my car. Bought new and haven't had any problems since!!

so what eventually happens after a lot of miles
I heard the apex seals need to be replaced is that right and if so how much does that cost and how many more miles can you go assuming you are maintaining your car good |

I am at 106,000 miles and so far things are still ok. |
Ummm...I'm guessing it mostly like any other car or motor in the world.
You keep up with the mant. and don't drive like a you-know-what every day it will last as long as you want it too... but then the oppsite is true too. If you never change the oil and drive around at the redline all day long, yeah, it will die quick. |
congrats you must take good care of your car
why is it that the rx8's loose their value so fast? i'm finding 04 and 05's with less that 30k miles on them for around 15 or 16 which is like half price where as cars like....hmm idk an si or something would only drop a few thousand |

Well thank you everyone for the information and I will show my dad this post and the replies maybe he will change his mind! If not I'll keep hittin canyons with my R6. Everyone drive safe!! |
I've seen cars with 250k on them and have heard of 300k.
It all depends upon how you drive. RX8's now have over 100k on them. do a search. |

But what the hell do i know, there could be a wankel powered snow mobile out there. Now that i think of it, a renesis powered snow mobile would probably be pretty sweet. |

As an owner of a 25 year old RX-7 that has not been rebuilt with over 200,000 km on it, I'd say the rotary is pretty reliable, especially N/A. The guys who pumped up the boost on their turbo 13B's went through apex seals pretty fast, but that's to be expected.
BTW, the only thing I've had to do to my car in the past 2 years is replace the wires, distributer and cap (didn't have to, but they were original) and replace the fuel pump. |
